  1. Flagship Eclipse XO has correctly pointed out that though the book Revan covering the transition from SW Knights of the Old Republic to SW The Old Republic establishes Revan as a Jedi Hero, his last acts in SW:TOR are as a villain. (Revan hood down, just before battle) While I personally would like to study both Republic and Empire endings for a clear understanding of the EU canon story line, I believe the SW:TOR Revan build should be opened to consideration as a 501st costume. The armoured shoulder art for the KOTOR Revan appears in more than just the book cover for of the same name. ¡Look at that crazy green-bladed Jedi Hero go! It is also on the Gentle Giant bust product; Note the product title; Consider the approval of the armoured Imperial Gunner. That is based upon the Hasbro 12" Action figure alone. In light of historical precedent and additional supporting reference I would suggest that an armoured shoulder option for Darth Revan become an approvable configuration for the character in the 501st.
  2. One of the tenants of 501st Legion costume approval is research. This model was not made for SWTOR. It is was made by the talented Lee Devonald, as a portfolio piece. While a very detailed example of fan art, it would not be admissible as reference for 501st consideration. 501st costuming is based on the recreation of LFL approved sources. This is not to say that recreating a fan’s artwork as a costume is any less of an achievement. As an example there is this female Darth Revan by Iselen on Deviant Art. Reproduced stunningly so by a fan of a fan; While both are obvious works of art, neither fall under 501st membership. And again, that is OK. The very first tenant of The Flagship Eclipse is to costume for yourself. You are the one wearing the costume. If your costume choice matches up with membership qualifications for a community, that is a bonus. But we suggest that if you are going to expend energy into making a costume, make sure that at the end of the process you are happy.
  3. Welcome to the 501st Legion’s Expanded Universe Detachment, The Flagship Eclipse. When considering 501st approvable characters, we look at Star Wars Villains and those who are otherwise aligned with the Empire. EU Canon Sith and Dark Side aligned characters are in this range. The Sith character of Darth Revan ceases to exist after Star Wars: Knights of the Olde Republic. In canon terms, the redeemed Revan of Star Wars: The Olde Republic is considered a Jedi Hero. By definition, TOR Revan would be a Rebel Legion character. A costume based on TOR references for Revan would not qualify for 501st consideration. And that is OK. Wonderful costumes will still be made. TOR Revan by Tonia Antilla The cross over is close enough that discussion of making such a costume is welcomed on The Flaghship Eclipse.
  4. Good evening, It is because of the ill fitting/reference defying components of vendors of Imperial Knight costumes that there is currently a moratorium on new Imperial Knight approvals. I know Sandy and Keith had to cut up, reshape, and rework the female kit to some degree to achieve her results. I would request that the vendor consider resizing both male and female spaulders to better match existing reference. This will be profitable as more sales will come from 501st interested parties. For 501st approval, the LMO has been looking for fit and accuracy matching existing reference, and not necessarily what a private vendor happens to offer/have in stock. And I support that standard. Beyond vendor options some have made their own armour; Martina Romoli of Italy Sofie of Belgium I share all examples here as inspiration. The costume work you have shared has always been phenominal. I feel confident that you will do the Imperial Knights justice. Be well, Thomas
  5. Good evening, There may be various interpretations of a character. For 501st consideration, you need to pick one. To narrow it down, look at the publication dates on the comics you have amassed as serious reference. Unless you simply did an image search on google. This is an OK option too, but it pays to then hunt down the publishing date, work, and artists. With this information, you can get a scope of her official appearance and when it was defined. You can also weed out fan images from Deviant Art. Lumiya the character has a lot of milage in the SW EU. (She was first depicted as an android.) Her character evolved many tymes, but it is her final incarnation as a cyborg following the ways of the Sith that is most popular. This costume by former SL Detachment Leader Leanne Malroy at CV I find quite well done; Equally worthy of applause is Russian Outpost CO Alyona Varivonchik’s Between the two different costumes and the wealth of references, a commonalty is established. Choose an LFL created reference that documents this and use that as your guide. Be well, Thomas
  6. I was recently asked to reply on the topic of Imperial Knights in the Legion, in response to another individual’s request for the approval of his own IK. This is my reply; I would approve the Star Wars Legacy Imperial Knight for 501st Legion Membership. Legacy, by the way, is an active comic with new issues still appearing on the shelf. And in the current 2014 Legacy story arc Imperial Knights continue to feature prominently. For the purpose of this discussion, we are talking about a unit character and NOT a product, NOT a vendor’s liberal interpretation a character. Though a vendor may find it easier to vac form/sell a kit to others without paying heed to reference, 501st approval is based on accuracy. Some of the suits approved for the Rebel Legion as Imperial Knights do not match the references for the armour. This is easily tested against the overwhelming abundance of reference that eight years of production gives a character. Imperial Knights of the first Star Wars Legacy served Emperor Fel. And as such they were ordered never to engage New Republic troopers or Jedi. They did in fact battle the multitudes of Sith lead by Darth Krayt. And while they serve the Emperor, an Imperial Knight’s first duty is to prevent the corruption of the Dark Side from ever taking hold of the Imperial Throne again. They are bound to destroy the Emperor who embraces the Dark Side. For this reason they are seen as good guys by the Rebel Legion. Imperial Knights have also been corrupted or impersonated: Imperial Knight Niin defected to the Sith after killing Empress Fel. Emperor Fel fell to the Dark Side. Darth Wredd simply stole Imperial Knight armour. There are other examples. These exceptions are unimportant to main argument. I asked Jan Duursema about her thoughts on entering the Light Side of the Force serving Imperial Knights into the 501st Legion back in 2007, before even the first evil Knights appeared. She pointed out that the Legacy Era 501st Stormtroopers are loyal to the Emperor. As are the Imperial Knights. The defining factor is simple; They are Imperials. Imperials who serve the Greater Good. Like Mara Jade, they serve the Emperor believing that they are helping the citizens of the SW Galaxy. And like Mara Jade, they go against the Emperor’s command once they see his motives are evil. Unlike Mara Jade, the Imperial Knights remain Loyal to the Empire. I have also submitted my own costume for approval. This will be the third tyme I have attempted 501st approval of my Imperial Knight.
  7. Good evening, I would recommend seeking the Bounty Hunter (BH,) should a complete version of the Asajj Bounty Hunter become approved in the 501st. That said, we can easily justify the costumer’s affiliation with either the 501st Bounty Hunters’ Guild, The Flagship Eclipse or both. Either way we are happy to see your progress images. Be well, Thomas
  8. Good evening, The selection of characters wanted at Disney Star Wars Weekends is subject to the discretion of the Park Staff and Executives. I have heard examples of Executives confused by Red Stormtroopers. To add to this confusion, much of the 501st membership cannot explain where a Red Stormtrooper comes from and simply responds that they are Magma Troopers. The Disney executives in turn believe that is too much to explain to their park guests during a parade. It is their event and so they call the shots. (Red Stormtroopers have only ever been identified as Dark Lady Lumiya’s personal Royal Guardsmen, in Royal Combat Uniform.) There is no definitive list of characters approved or disapproved for this one high profile event. The general rule is that Disney provides face characters though. And yes, many of The Flagship Eclipse characters happen to be face characters. If you are considering join the 501st Legion to participate in this one event, I recommend a Stormtrooper Costume, preferably not the FX build as the First Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment looks down upon that kit. Or, try for a job a Disney working as staff for Star Wars Weekend. If however, your interest is in achieving costuming excellence for your favourite Expanded Universe Villain, do it. Just do it for yourself. 501st membership and high profile events are never guaranteed. But awesome memories and valuable experience is almost assured. Be well, Thomas
  9. An author and a gentleman, Timothy Zahn is perhaps the most responsive creator I have had the honour to communicate with. Here is an excerpt from our communication last night; With this in mind, I recommend moving all incarnations of Mara Jade to the category Denizens. But I also believe that Denizens should be broken up into Citizens and Denizens. I would place Mara Jade, Prince Xizor, Guri, Villainous Senators, Separtists, in Citizens and leave Denizens as the traditional home to Tusken Raiders, Gamorean Guards, Jawas, Wampas, Skiff personal, and other fringe elements. Be well, Thomas
  10. The Flagship Eclipse was formed out of the Mara Jade Builders Group. In consideration of the purpose of this discussion all of our venerable Mara Jade incarnations would best be categorized under Denizen and not Dark Side Adept. To my knowledge, Mara never uses the Dark Side of the Force. While I agree it is a fine point, that is the whole point of this discussion. Be well, Thomas
  11. I like the work you have shown. I would like to see it in context on your back or a dummy of your back. But this is not why I am writing. I want to challenge the notion that folk do not like the Expanded Universe and for that reason there is not a chorus of replies to your build thread yet. I have a few build threads on this forum. But I don't recall either of you commenting on them. But that is only natural. ¿Are you interested in making a Darth Bane, Prince Xizor, or Imperial Knight? Possibly, possibly not. If not, you may stop by and say “nice suit,” or “¿have you tried this solution.” But that takes effort. And effort comes from shared passion. One way a costume generates passion is when it becomes a commodity, meaning you can buy it. The artist who sells his work generates more interest than the artist who works for his art. The Flagship Eclipse does not cater to vendors to the extent other more profitable based characters detachments do. By nature, many of our costumes are one-ups. When you cannot buy it, you can watch. If your interest is in another character, you may not be inspired by a Non-Revan thread. It might take a person who simply loves costuming for costuming’s sake to respond to a build thread of a costume they never intend to make. I celebrate well made costumes. I like to watch other builds. But still, I tend to reserve comments for when the suit starts to come together, and when someone does something incredibly ingenious. Folk still love the EU. That is why SW is still on the shelves. You are likely being watched more than you know. Be well, And keep doing what you do for you. Sharing it here is highly appreciated.
  12. Good morning, I think it is very important for Legion members to have their costume displayed on their Legion profile and now I can help. At the same tyme we can share your costume images on our Facebook membership gallery. Here is a recent example; This was created for our Facebook membership gallery. (Please see the posts above for TFE Facebook membership image submission guidelines) The FB gallery portrait above was used to make Cathy’s Legion profile image below which had been blank for nearly two years. If you can send me quality images, well lit in and out of costume, I will happy volunteer the two hours it takes to process and upload the files into both the Legion and Facebook galleries. My goal is to help you look good in our community. Be well, Thomas
  13. Tssk. Spent the last hour + researching. You got me curious. The leg guards featured in the TCG image were released no later than 1999. Matching these may prove problematic. Consider the example of Darth Maul’s boots; The exact boot is known (Frank Thomas Titan Touring Boot 101) but no longer made. Scoring a pair in your size is rare and very expensive. So the 501st allows approximations. After looking at the characteristics of the TCG Mara Leg wear, I felt confident that Decipher did little to no modification of a readily available–1999 Internet ordering options–single very padded knee leg guard. I thought for sure that I could find a match under baseball umpire gear. I came close, but nothing I was happy with. I think an approximation might be the best we can hope for now. Here is one option I like from Damascus (DSG100 Hard Shell Shin Guards) The knee padding is not leather, and over all the piece lacks the sheen the TCG leg armour. One would need to clip the toe and metatarsal guards, paint up the shins and possibly find a solution to enhance the luster of the knee pad. For the effort though, one might well look into the techniques of making custom fit leg armour and then match the comic appearance. Good night, Thomas
  14. Good evening, I recommend sharing images of the exact version of Mara Jade you are looking to replicate. I imagine you will want the Decipher TCG shots of Shannon Baksa: While these are an approximation of the more canon appearance of the character’s armour from the original comics, gear that matches the TCG portrait is acceptable for Legion approval. Be well and welcome aboard. Thomas
  15. Chris Skiles of the The Star Garrison of the 501st Legion passed away on the 3rd of February, 2014. Though Chris was a relatively new member of The 501st Legion, he is known for his enthusiasm and had spoken of how eager he was to participate in his first official troop as a 501st Legion member. It is with great pride that we now enter Chris’s name into the 501st’s Hall of Eternal Legionnaires.
  16. Darth Nihilus, Star Wars: Champions of the Force Costumed by Eternal Legionnaire Chris Skiles (SL-93620) Pride of The Star Garrison of the 501st Legion Chris is reported to have passed away yesterday, 3rd of February 2014 from a diabetic coma. I spoke with Chris just four days ago. He wanted to use this image of himself for his detachment portrait in memory of his beloved hound Abby. Now, but suddenly, they are reunited. Be well Christopher.
  17. Good morning, I have seen a number of responses to this thread suggesting Grandfathering. In terms of 501st membership policy, Grandfathering has been strictly avoided. And with good reason. The following is but one example. Many non-bucket heads may be unaware of the controversy the above image illustrates. The first helmet represents what the First Imperial Stormtroopers Detachment considers closer in line to canon appearance of the Stormtrooper helmet. The second is the now infamous FX Helmet. Loved by some, disdained and hated by many, it was part of one of the very first well distributed TK kits in the World. As such, the FX helmet featured prominently in the foundation of the 501st. A decade later, Legion Founder Albin Johnson models his FX bucket next to another well known Star Wars fan. There are members of the Legion who insist that their fellow members change their FX buckets to another more screen accurate helmet or face becoming inactive. Others have lobbied for refusing membership to individuals who have this helmet. When it was pointed out that our Legion founder, and much of the Japanese Garrison (at the tyme) wore this build the dissenters suggested Grandfathering. Grandfathering used when a new ruling is at odds with existing reality. I believe that when a ruling or policy would in a sense outlaw another long standing tenant that the new ruling should be reconsidered. If the existing ruling proves to be so terribly flawed, it should be overwritten. If we say, well, it was never that bad, lets just “Grandfather” existing instances and apply this new ruling with an iron clad fist all new attempts we create an inequity based on nothing more than tyme of initiation. I do not support giving special approval rights to one member’s costume over another’s. I think all solutions to a given community issue should be heard. Solutions that benefit just the person posting may still help the rest of the community, present and future. I encourage suggestions that consider all membership, not just the individual, and not just this Detachment. Be well, Thomas
  18. About Darth Maul Darth and Lord are honourifics in Universe, for Star Wars. For example there is this introduction quote; ”This is my apprentice, Darth Maul.” Please see this link; New Apprentice I see argument that both the titles of Lord and Darth can be applied to apprentices in the traditional Star Wars Canon Universe. But I do not really believe anyone would seriously consider moving Darth Maul out of the Sith Lord category. Be well, Thomas
  19. Good morning, I took a few days off to address home issues. Right now I read folk arguing fiercely for keeping the designation that personally affects them. This is understandable but perhaps premature. Consider, not all current prefixes have been created with the same criteria. I maintain that before the chopping up and reassigning prefix designations that we must come up with guiding rules for how a prefix is applied. 1. Two lettres need not stand for an intelligible abbreviation The Legion prefix system could use an overhaul though, I would argue that we did not need the become obsessed with two lettres having to be clear abbreviations for binding descriptions. ¿TK 421 why aren't you at your post? This scene is the reason why we have prefixes for Legion ID numbers. This is why TK stands for Stormtrooper. All other prefixes we made up. In the give and take reality the 501st has influences, now Official LFL media has adopted our designations. But no Sith Lord has an ID number in Universe. Nor would any self respecting Jawa, Tusken Raider, or Night Sister. The Legion ID number, at its heart, is clerical. It is good when a prefix makes sense. But some must be viewed with a little flexibility. TK does not somehow work out to be Stormtrooper. We must explain explain the reference, especially to Disney era fans who, may have never seen the SW original trilogy. Remember, while we live and breathe Star Wars, we must understand that some explanation beyond a costume category prefix and name might be required for our most anal fans and members. And that is OK. 2. Standing prefixes may evolve to mean something beyond the original intent ¿Who says TX stands for Trooper X? History perhaps. Back before the purge of custom costumes in the 501st Legion we even had custom sand persons. The Legion charter never included customs, but at one point it did not specifically disallow customs. LMO Michael Washko determined that customs were growing out of hand and around 2004 one night went through the database and deactivated several dozen Legion members with custom costumes in the SL and BH categories. Most feel not nearly enough warning was given and some hard feelings were minted. Today we have two new costuming clubs to serve for those SW themed customs, The Dark Empire and The Mandalorian Mercs. When Michael Washko stepped down, just before the end of his term, I was asked to step up as LMO. I made it my policy to see costume policy enforced equally throughout the Legion. And the onus of completing the custom purge fell to me. TX became Special Operations. (I researched to determine the canon appearance of each TX unit. Today some folk insist on referring to Red Stormtroopers by the fan coined “Magma Troopers” even though by LFL cannon they were the body guards of Dark Lady Lumiya. Red Stormtrooper armour is what pre-Crimson Empire Royal Guards were supposed to wear when in battle.) Here, TX means what we say it means. SL can easily do the same. Some food for thought. I must adjourn to gather some food for my body. Be well, Thomas
  20. Good afternoon, This is not a dead topic, rather it is work in progress. There have been a few revisions to Legion Designations in past. The protocol that these followed were common sense courtesies. The massive break-up of the Clone Trooper designation was called for by the detachment members themselves at a tyme that the Legion’s Database could not support the same member having two costumes with the same designation. The proposed prefixes came from the detachment, were discussed with Legion Council, and put to vote by garrison across the Legion. That courtesy was not implemented here. I do not believe it was an intentional slight. Rather a missed step in the massive attempt to overhaul the Legion ID system. It is still an important step. I have asked Damian for a formal statement about the misstep, and to restore all DS to SL. For the tyme being. The truth is, if you look at it, BH (Bounty Hunters), DZ (Denizens), and SL (Sith Lords) have become catch all designations. It would make more sense for some of these designations to be divided. And for other designations to become consolidated. I have recommended that we start the conversation over. I have asked that all intended revision to the Legion Designation system be mapped out and agreed upon by Detachment as represented in the DL forum on the 501st. That once we establish a unified proposal, then we present the Detachment specific changes to the Detachments for ratification. This may not come to pass, but it is the best that I can think to suggest at this moment. Be well, Thomas
  21. Good morning, Damian has responded. He feels that because the thread in which the change to DS was eventually purposed was up for four and half months, the blame is on me as your Detachment Leader not seeing it and reporting it to you. I will accept that responsibility, but I will counter it is a misstep in protocol to make a change to another group without first securing their acknowledgement and hopefully their consent. In this case, it is the LMO’s decision to go forward with this change if he believes it is the best interest of the Legion. The only recourse would be through the Legion Council. I am currently protesting the move to break certain characters out of the Sith Lord (SL) designation and reassigning them to Dark Side (DS) because I believe that none of the affected members requested such a change and I know none of the affected members were notified of the change proposal. Had I seen the thread entitled Letter Designaiton Questions 1.2.3.4.. earlier on, I believe we might still be faced with this change, even if under protest. It will not change your membership. Going forward other designations and members of other detachments be affected too. I do not want to work against our command structure, or against Damian’s good intentions. I do not feel issuing a notice of protest is working against my fellow. My intent is to go on record as expressing my will, which I believe is shared by this community. We could make a poll, but understand it would not be considered binding by Legion Command.
  22. Good morning, Here and in a private message DAngel has alleged three accusations that I would like to disabuse us all of. 1. The Legion Membership Officers did not do this in secret. Damian posted to both the hidden LMO board and then the Detachment Leader forum. He did fail to secure acknowledgement of the proposition, and may have caused undo grievance by putting his proposition into effect without notice. (see thread summary below.) 2. This change does not make members second class citizens. If you thought having the SL before your title put you above anyone else in the Legion, you are sadly mistaken. If you did not then ¿why would a new designation be seen as anything less? 3. Not equating Lady with Lord and/or not recognizing the significance of the title of Mother in Mother Talzin is not discrimination. It is simply poor Star Wars Expanded Universe scholarship. ¡Hell, I will confess to being confused about it all and EU is what I do! Input should have been sought to help with this, but the decision was most certainly not a deliberate attempt at discrimination. I have reread the thread in the Detachment Leader board. The following is a link to the same thread. Only Legion Council Members, Legion Command Staff, and Detachment Leaders will be able to view its contents; Letter Designations... Questions 1,2,3,...4... Here is my synopsis for those who do not have access; I missed this thread and though the very first folk to be affected were all from the Detachment I represent, no one thought to send me a heads up. That is OK. That happens. Our Legion Web Deputy’s wife is in The Flagship Eclipse. He expressed his objections to the Dark Side designation in the hidden LMO board but was “outvoted.” He assumed that I had been notified and did not see this thread in the Detachment Leader Board. LMO Damian advanced the thread to the Detachment Leaders board on 30.Aug.2013. He introduced the concept of reassigning, changing, and adding Legion ID prefixes all across the Legion, not just in SL. Aside from bragging rights of having assembled a concept trooper kit, most every member of the Legion Council appeared to ignore this this thread. (The Kevin Weir’s concept armour is a well made kit and I fully appreciate the excitement over it.) To their credit, many other DL’s caught this thread and commented. And for the first three pages I see many of those DL's argued against changing prefixes. Then the discussion becomes sporatic; 16.Nov.2013 Damian makes his first response since introducing this topic. Rather than respond to the critics of the the idea, Damian posted his proposal to reassign characters in the SL. (All of which happen to be covered by TFE.) NO ONE RESPONDS. Instead there was banter about the concept trooper armour for the next page and a half. 30.Nov.2013 Damian posted that his proposal–now without a single response from the DLs–was moving forward, possibly under the name DA for Dark Side Adept. Damian then asked how the forum for ideas on how those affected should be notified. He suggests announcements on the respective detachments. There are no replies to this post. 25.Dec.2013 The only post to follow Damian’s last post is Damian himself stating that the change in designations has been made. FISD and BHG DL’s respond with “Thanks for the heads up” and “Sounds Good to me.” 17.Jan.2013 I make the next three posts to the thread, first stating my confusion, second questioning if we should do this after all, and third requesting a moratorium on these changes. Gosh, looking back at the thread blow by blow I feel a number of mistakes were made. And mistakes happen but in light of member response and basic failure of communication I have formally requested that the DS designation change be rescinded and that members be restored to their SL designations. I appreciate the intent behind the change, but I feel the way this was was done does not benefit the 501st Legion as a whole. I do not have the authority to insist upon reverting the SL designation as it was, but I would hope that the Legion Membership Officers review this very thread and perhaps come to a similar conclusion. Be well, Thomas
  23. Lastly, I want to assure everyone reading that there was no intentional slight by the Legion Command by not communicating their intention to change some of the designations of characters discussed in our detachment in the Legion Database. The driving force behind the change was to make sense out of a designation system that has steadily been growing outdated and obsolete. It is by coincidence that all of the affected characters happen to be represented on The Flagship Eclipse. One of our webmasters had advance notice of this discussion and argued against it in the hidden LMO forum. (I do not have access to the LMO forum.) The Legion Web Deputy assumed that all pertinent parties would be notified. LMO Damian Jorgensen had been sharing his reasoning with LMO Kenneth Seymour and the Legion Webteam, then they moved the discussion to the Detachment Leader board. (Only a few Detachment Leaders post to the DL Board with regularity. Some Detachments Leaders have never used the board.) I feel I should have been notified, but I understand how LMO Jorgensen could have missed this as being of concern to our detachment. I consider the discussion open, and I am still requesting that the DS designation be undone. At least until a holistic review of the entire designation system can be sorted and all of membership be polled for ratification. This may not come to pass. It is not my decision. But I do know Damian and I feel he is reasonable. Please do not worry yourselves excessively. Your concerns are being noted and will be shared for due consideration. Good night.
  24. A few Flagship Eclipse members have looked longingly at becoming members of the Sith Lord Detachment. Long-tyme members of this detachment could tell you that this board exists because at the tyme of our founding both the SLD staff and the majority of the SLD membership voted against including any non-movie characters in their Detachment. Their motto echoed their disdain of all things EU: SLD, The TRUE Sith Lord Detachment. That ugly episode is now behind us and the SLD of today openly welcomes our most popular characters. This is the way it should have always been. One imaginary spaceman is no more and no less “true” than another imaginary spaceman. As a Legion we should celebrate and bond together. Still, the territory and popularity that The Flagship Eclipse currently enjoys was hard won. It seems odd to me that any of our membership would prefer have their characters moved to another detachment, (especially to the one detachment that once thought so little of your costume efforts that it forced The Flagship Eclipse into existence.) Detachment alignment of a character is decided by detachment membership and between detachments. DL’s report that preference to the LMO(s) and when in doubt, the LMO must make a decision on which detachment a character will be represented under on the 501st Legion database. I am olde guard. I am not about to recommend EU characters be reassigned to another detachment on a whim. I will listen to the detachment as a whole and report your will to the LMO, but I stand against hopping ship. I am proud of the work this Detachment has achieved. I hope even our newer members can appreciate the efforts of The Flagship Eclipse and share in that pride. Be well, Thomas
  25. Good evening, A handful of members have now contacted me privately for the inside scoop on this topic. I have been redirecting folk to this thread because I find it more efficient to have the information in one place. I realize that there have been some outstanding questions raised in this thread and elsewhere that I would like to address. ¿CRLs, Where did they go? The CRLs that are associated with characters currently designated as Dark Side (DS) are still in place but the 501st Legion database will require additional tuning for them to reappear for public access. The 501st Legion has a web team of its own, but recoding the database usually falls to Darren Blum. (He deserves accommodation for his work.) Going forward, they should appear on the 501st Legion website again, under The Flagship Eclipse’s portion of the CRL. ¿It the CRL for my character is not visible, does that mean I am no longer an active memeber/ does that mean the costume I am making will not be accepted by the 501st? First and foremost, CRL does not stand for costume requirement list. CRL is the abbreviation for costume reference library. I made this banner which now appears in all CRL entries to help drive this point home; ¿What is the difference? The CRL was originally envisioned as showcasing the best examples of individual costumes and the basic details of their construction. We did not want to promote a particular armour maker, or one individual’s interpretation of a character over another. Instead, the CRL was meant to highlight information and considerations as collected throughout the 501st Legion. Some CRL’s came from the Detachment that the character was officially discussed in. Some were assembled by other Legion members who simply had the tyme and access to photos of member’s costume in question. Some costume hopefuls, GML’s and even LMO’s go no further than the CRL's to validate a costume. I caution that a given Legion CRL entry should be seen as excellent reference, but that additional research and review may be called for. That there are valid options that may not have been included in a given CRL that can easily be verified before turning down a costume. And then some costumes, often Expanded Universe, have not been made before and do not have a CRL. Or only have one example in the Legion. I would be very cautious about basing a costume on the personal interpretation of another costumer. That is what research is for. The missing CRL’s should reappear once the database is sorted. In the meantyme, most CRL’s related to The Flagship Eclispe appear on our forums under each character discussion thread. If a character does not have a CRL entry, or costume detail explanation started, feel free to begin a post under the character’s discussion thread. Be sure to point to visual reference, citing publication. (Deviantart and Wikipedia are not valid publications.) ¿How will Disney’s new push to sort canon and non-canon EU affect my membership/potential membership? Expanded Universe once meant non-canon. EU events and characters happened outside of G-canon (George Lucas movies.) But some EU became really popular ($$$.) And having that canon label made some franchises even more ($$$) popular. In my experience, nothing under the SW banner gets thrown away. Some aspects will rise and fall in popularity. It is the copyright holder’s business to use that popularity to the best of their ability. But that is not the mission of the 501st Legion. We make and celebrate accurate costumes of villains, Imperials, and Dark Side aligned characters from the Star Wars Universe as a whole. Whether Disney calls it canon or EU, or EU cannon, characters from media baring the SW license have been acceptable for 501st membership consideration. And I do not see that changing. It is the core of what the 501st Legion stands for. Be well, Thomas
