  1. I thought I'd do a signal boost here, not only to benefit my friends at Moonbase Creations, but to let other Revans know about this awesome upcoming opportunity. Moonbase Creations (find them on facebook) is going to be doing a release of their new Darth Revan mask kit soon, and I daresay it's is a great-looking mask. So, if you're in the market, definitely keep an eye out on their page.
  2. Wow, that sounds like a really good incentive to go saber-less... XD While your GML is right, the point still stands that Revan has to put it *somewhere* when he's not using it... Lol. Seems like there would be no reason to carry it bladeless, in that instance. It would just be occupying an otherwise free hand, without any "show." But anyway, I only ask because I'm trying to decide where I'm attaching mine. I've thought about adding magnets to the small of my back and having it chill back there while I'm not using it, but I can still have it on hand to show people. I know in the past, others have attached them to the rings at the bottom, but it seems like it would tug too much to one side if I did that.
  3. No problem! I need to get back on the horse, trooping takes up a lot more time than I realize. Lol.
  4. I can't wait! May I ask how you plan on attaching it to your armor?
  5. Those are beautiful! Can't wait to get mine made by one of our Garrison armorers.
  6. Looks like you're doing good! For the three masks you posted, the left one looks most accurate, but I'd say go darker silver, almost a gunmetal color. Don't forget the ribbing between the armor plates.
  7. I'm sorry to hear that, Atrocity. Glad to hear he's doing well, though. Take time for your family, the Dark Lord of the Sith can wait.
  8. OFC it looks pretty! This version of the costume is such a bear, I think you're the first I've seen actually try to tackle it. So yeah, it looks GREAT. Don't ever doubt yourself too much. As far as the chest piece goes, is that a leather/vinyl thing? IDK what I'd recommend doing to it to create the ridges and grooves without knowing what exactly you're working with. If you have a really steady hand, maybe puffy paint, then paint it over? Taigon is right with his analysis of what should be ridges and what should be grooves, I'm just not sure how you can create the grooves without destroying what you've got. I'll do some thinking, and if I figure anything out, I'll post suggestions.
  9. Hahahaha, I love it. It's amazing how many little improvements can go such a long way with this kit. I was talking to a guy at a con we did last month who wants to do a Revan with this kit, so I will definitely be pointing him to this thread.
  10. Hey, no problems! Ohhhh yes, for the UKG I'm sure they'd make you have a back plate. And that has been something that has been discussed on the 501st GML boards for a while now... I've been talking to our Garrison's former and current GML about that lately. Hope you find some useful info here! It takes some digging, but it's there. Looking at other custom builds of other costumes can help a bunch, too, just for general knowledge. You can also look at the back plates of the MyWickedArmor sets that a lot of people have to get an idea of what it might look like.
  11. In the meantime, here are some tidbits on what I've been working on... Gloves! I never can find gloves that fit my delicate mitts, so I decided to make my own. I used a technique a friend of mine uses for all her custom glove needs. First, I traced my hand. (Actually, I had my mom trace my hand because I wanted to make sure the pen was straight up-and-down on the paper so there were no skinny parts on the fingers.) Then, I cut them out, about an eighth of an inch away from the lines. At first, the wrist was too narrow, and I felt the thumb was too tight, so we widened the wrist a bit and I moved my thumb out more on the second tracing to ensure there was enough room for maximum flexibility. (Version 2 is on the left, version 1 on the right.) http://imageshack.com/i/n5fynzj Then, I pinned the pattern on two layers of 4-way stretch lycra, good sides facing in, of course. We sewed around the pattern (make sure you use a small, skinny zigzag stitch when using fabric this stretchy!), then cut around the seam before turning the glove right-side-out. You can get pretty close to the stitches in the fingertips so they're clean, because lycra doesn't fray, but be very careful not to cut the stitches themselves. http://imageshack.com/i/n5fynzj The result was a perfectly-fitting glove! It even took to making a fist quite well. Very Sith. http://imageshack.com/i/jwux0ej http://imageshack.com/i/mszce8j For the right glove, I did something special. I'm constantly seeing people take their gloves (and even forearm guards) off so they can use their phones, so I thought I'd have a glove I can wear and use my phone with at the same time! For my Commander Shepard build, I obtained a fat quarter of material that's conductive, so you can use touchscreens with it. To make this happen, we basically approached the right glove the same way as the left one, except we cut around the tips of the fingers we wanted to use the conductive fabric on. http://imageshack.com/i/0a2bywj Then, we unpinned just fingertips on the side of the fabric that would be the "bottom" side once everything was turned right-side-out, and snipped them off below where the first knuckle would be. We re-pinned on small squares of the silver conductive fabric, sewed them on, and then sewed the whole glove together just as we did with the first one. This is the resulting glove: http://imageshack.com/i/b8ny3yj The gloves are just long enough that they will stay tucked under the bodysuit I'll be wearing and the vembraces. I got the bodysuit last month, and it's bigger than I was lead to believe by the size chart, but it's NBD, because I will probably have to take it in by hand anyway, and it doesn't need to be skintight for my purposes. I also have a prototype of one of my hand plates, made from some scrap Worbla I had lying around. It doesn't have all the center ridges, I decided to abandon that design and go with a more symmetrical one, but here it is: http://imageshack.com/i/0wur5kj Regarding the mask, I know some people have asked me what mine will look like. It is being made by DH-P/FX, and he's on Facebook and has posted some pictures of the Revan mask he's working on. It will actually go all the way over the forehead and back a bit, so I'm planning on installing a rare earth magnet on it so my hood will stay in place. Until next time! I have pictures of the cuirass I need to upload, even though they're kinda messy. XD
  12. Hey all! Sky"is-terribad-at-taking-pictures"Sith just took some time to snap a photo of her new silk! Yay! http://imageshack.com/i/0jvbxxj On Kilryth's recommendation, I bought a ton of black silk noil from Thai Silks. That's the matte black stuff you see at the very end of the roll there. I'll take a better picture once I get everything unrolled and ready for soft parts construction. The burgundy charmeuse (also from Thai Silks) is obviously for the burgundy sash that hangs from the big O ring. The shiny black charmeuse (from Dharma Trading, to save some $$) is for the black sash that goes around the legs. I think the shiny black will make an excellent contrast against the matte raw silk for pictures and stuff. It drapes BEAUTIFULLY. I can't wait to get started with this stuff. Pictures of armor progress will be up soon...right now it's kind of a piled mess of Worbla, bondo, and scraps. XD I'm gonna get all the bondo sanded down at an armor party on the 23rd, so hopefully I'll have a lot to show after that!
  13. The general consensus on the back of the cuirass is that yes, there is one, and the image of Revan's armor made for him by the Star Forge if he falls to the dark side in KotOR is the same as Darth Revan's old armor. It's just missing significant portions of the robes compared to the Darth Revan getup. However, this version is not canon, because canonically, Revan doesn't fall back to the dark side. Because of this, it states on the Costume Standards thread that the back of the cuirass is optional, since the only good look we get of it is on a non-canonical version of the outfit. (Or, at least, that's the way I understand it.) You do have the option of not including it for now...but there has been talk of making it a requirement, so perhaps it can be a project for the future. As for the color, it's the same as the front. So, if you're going to construct the back, try and match the color of the front as best you can. Edit: If the front is being made from HIPS/ABS, it would be best to make the back out of it, too. Make some friends in your local garrison and one of them will probably have a vac-former you can use. Look at others' WIP threads here to get some idea of how they did theirs. I know Carolyn (Revan3956) - who was active here years ago - custom-sculpted her chest piece and had a friend vac-form it. It should be the same basic process for the back plate. Hope all goes well with obtaining the kit!
  14. Speaking as someone who has done quite a bit of handling for her Garrison, most people that have lightsabers at our troops only turn them on when there are pictures being taken. Carrying around a fully-constructed lightsaber all the time is a bit of a hassle...so I'd say get something you can remove the blade from and just hang the hilt from your armor, keeping the blade (and battery, to save weight) in your bin until you want it. Can't wait to see your build!
  15. SWTOR Revan has been a big point of debate since the game came out. I personally think he could be approved for both 501st and Rebel Legion in this outfit, but that's just my opinion and I don't actually get to make those calls. It's left very much open to interpretation whether or not he's a dark or light side character in light of the events of SWTOR. That said, I think you're very brave for taking this costume on! It looks quite complex compared to the traditional Darth Revan from KotOR. But you did great with Starkiller, so I have faith in you. I really wish there was a version of Revan we could get approved for RL. I thought about perhaps pitching the Star Forge armor (light side) at some point, but I don't know if that's considered canon enough.
  16. Loving the pictures you have! The mask and vembraces look great, looks like you fabricated yourself an awesome ring, too! Definitely clear coat everything. It will protect against chipping and any weathering you *don't* want. I even go so far as to clear coat before I start weathering, then weather, then clear coat again. The hood I patterned using the hood on one of my favorite hoodies. I just looked at how the hood hung on my head and made the appropriate modifications (longer pieces for the cowl, draped a bit more in the front, etc). With the capelet I'm draping some cheap muslin over the shoulders of my mannequin to get the right look and pattern before I cut into any good fabric. I'm looking at 2-3 yards overall for both the capelet and hood, if that helps any. For the armor bridge, I'm using silver PVC fabric and ribbing it similar to a TK neckseal. The fabric is kind of bright so I'll be using some fabric/upholstery airbrush paints to darken the ridges a bit. I chose PVC because it was already available in a similar color to what I wanted. I've got some scrap vinyl I'll sew onto the back to make it a bit stronger.
  17. Yep, he messaged me, too and told me as such.

    Mojo's Revan WIP

I'm gonna shoot you a PM, Luna. This is definitely what I will need the most help with!
  19. I'd love to see it! You should post pics of your group on the RPF thread, too!
  20. I know how that goes! Taking your time with a costume is a good thing, though...especially with a scratch build. Have fun at NYCC!

    Revan Costume

German jack boots are AWESOME. They're required for other costumes, like TIE pilots, so you can get more use out of them than just with Revan. That's always a plus! That style of boot runs narrow, from what I've heard from all the guys in my Garrison. So you'd probably want to go at least a half size up from what you normally wear in boots.
  22. Hey Kilryth, how much silk did you order? I'm getting to that point... probably this week. And you ordered it from Thai Silks?
  23. You would be surprised... My Shepard vembraces made me pound my head on a wall for days. I was, for the first time in my life, cursing my skinny wrists. XD That said, vembraces are definitely the part to mess up on and learn from, since you'll waste less material with them versus something bigger, like the cuirass. If you want to see the Queen of Worbla, google Kamui Cosplay. She's got some great tutorials on working with the stuff, and I'm using her method. I'm just terrible about posting progress pics. LOL. Actually, I think Atrocity's approach is probably even lighter than mine because mine requires a double layer of Worbla. That EVA foam is more bulk, but it's so light!
