  1. Candyman there are no photos from your troop last weekend! We demand pictures (politely)!
  2. I just wanna say, as a GWL, you're going to be a nightmare to get all your photos uploaded to the right places due to all your SL designations. But congrats and holy jeeze you're on fire.
  3. Thanks for your input. I'd love to hear from anyone else interested in piping up as well. I'm torn all things considered. The more images I sought out, the more the water turned muddy. I don't think the direct result of this post is to get a hard answer, but it could be used to help glean some insight if we later have to discuss it.
  4. I caution against straps, rings, rivets, zippers if at all possible. The reality of the situation is that boots are not a high priority issue on this costume and are usually a very minor factor for approval. That said, I would suggest the information included in this thread as a good form of guidance and I recommend using your best judgement and the information presented here. If you have something you'd like a specific question of, shoot us a picture and we'll happily pounce on it like hungry cheetahs.
  5. Haven't seen you in a while! Congrats on the approval!
  6. Until I get a better location, here is a link to the thread I created with a bunch of mask source material. This should get you started with colors and minor variations in the schemes. I do not have a ton of experience with fabrication but you can check out our material crafting info off the main page. I think you might be on the right track with your plan though. Lastly, as always, post photos!
  7. Yeah I would want to see the back, it might be a matter of just not being able to raise your arms much, I usually don't go greater than 90 degrees personally and that usually keeps it simple. I need to work on a better anchor system but 9/10 I'm okay. I threw a first pitch at a baseball game and had my capelet pop out. Otherwise stuff holds up. Your system seems decent I like that it's actually attached.
  8. This sounds like an issue where more is better. If you tuck the excess fabric in to where it 'needs' to be you can always mark that, attach and then mark for the hooks and if you feel up to it, remove the excess fabric after. Pics for sure, to help.
  9. Another note, while I made the poll below, I'm actually thinking it is going to be much like the color of the eyeballs (an issue we discussed a few months back), and I am starting to lean toward the possibility that either red or silver are acceptable, depending on what you are portraying. My unknowing co-workers suggested that he has 3 masks, depending on his mood.
  10. Good sir Darth Tagion, you say a Darth Marr?! You mean to tell me no one has done this costume (it IS a costume that COULD potentially be canon approvable) and it would be a Legion 1st? Now that is an impressive costume.....*really temped to do it* Ah... I want to make a Revan so bad, but we have an amazing Revan in our Garrison (I know that shouldnt stop me) Yes, to all of the above. Full models are there, he's in comics, more importantly, you can see all of the costume via the game and given the right application, it would be doable.
  11. Sorry you did not get a reply sooner, you should have. Life's been a bit crazy following the election and a big banquet this weekend. Sadly I must report that custom characters such as what you're describing do not meet the 501st qualifications for approval. The costume must be of an official character and their official costume. For example, if you had concept art and game art with Vette, in a particular flight suit outfit that was printed and/or what she is seen with in game normally, that would be fine. But if you put her in Darth Malak's outfit, that would not. More in line with what you've described though, Darth Marr would likely be a great candidate for what you mentioned, and we do not currently have any. It would take a lot of work, but no more than making the character you described I would suspect. Additionally, I believe that the Emperor would be a great candidate for a costume and a bit interesting to make look rough/scary as well as allow you to see. If you do have your heart set on this particular character, that is totally understandable, and I would suggest you check out the Dark Empire, another Star Wars costuming club, known to work with us from time to time in some locations. They will have guidelines for making a character like that. Alternatively you could always look to make one of the many many characters we offer and we'd love to have you. My suggestion is to go with what your heart really tells you you want to do. Whatever it is, find something that you can be passionate about and make something that the whole world will want to see (or a bunch of really excited Star Wars fans at the very least. )
  12. Found it! I'm okay with the eyeballs.
  13. As we move along and more materials and sources become available some times we learn things we didn't know about costumes. One thing of a bit of issue is the forehead of the mask. The masks historically have been seen with both silver/gray and with red foreheads. As a bit of stomping point it shouldn't normally be seen much buuuuuuut, for the sake of accuracy I'd hope to get a push toward some standardization. That being said, I don't think my own single opinion on the matter is enough to make a change or push like that, not when it comes to a color choice. Also, we likely need to update the list of source material to include more recent additions. I'd like to put on trial the forehead of the mask. Let members submit their evidence and make their case. Rules of Engagement: Only submit credible sources of work (no fan art). Be polite Objective. Red: This one?.?. Silver: None: While I am a strong fan of the idea of moving to a mask-less Revan option, the outline presented here implies there's nothing there! But that also brings up the point of the "black side panels" which I'm also unsure of.
  14. First off everything really seems to sit right, I'm moderately concerned about the hood letting us see the forehead, it ought to be a bit lower. However, for the sake of details, I know historically we've approved masks with red foreheads, but now with the MMO, and comics both supporting the silver forehead, there should be a transition just above the visor eyebrow area to silver. I can provide photos if you like (little sleepy right now). Also, I know they've been approved before, but I'd also raise a concern on the eyeballs on the chest and their shape, based on this photo: I'll do a little more research when I've had some more coffee to find some viable source material that might support those eyeballs you have a little better. Optionally, if you wanted you could raise the hakama/red sash a little for safety/comfort if you wanted but by no means are you incorrect where you are at. Lastly the straps behind the greeblies seem a little dark, and I would suggest brightening them up with some gray or silver that is a tad brighter, you don't need to match the greeblies, but you could bring them a little closer in shade. Looks really good. If I had a personal vote on the matter I'd say the forehead color/exposure is probably my biggest concern and pending that I'd give it my endorsement based on everything here. Annd, because I don't want to be just one person making a call on the forehead I will make a post calling for source material in support of either red or silver foreheads. I do not think it has been brought up and should be.
  15. Your points seem to be correct, I would suggest getting a couple more people to weigh in before you proceed, if you want an official response. The lines created there do make it appear to be an overlapped fabric as opposed to simply a different paint color. Good eyes.
  16. I would suggest ironing and/or using a glue to make them more like a permanent crease such as used in men's pants some times. You're correct on there not being a requirement for more. My vote would be the good, better, best. Yours is good and I like the material, making those look crisper would be better, best would be an exact mirror image of the costume as seen in the game.
  17. I like your book's version better.
  18. Another comment, I thought of after mentioning: Thanks to the game, all we see is below the ankle. As it is, I do have boots with buckles up top as you can see. However, between the hakama and putting my pants over the tops of the boots, that never gets seen, for the record. When considering boots I would do similar unless you were set on tucking your pants into your boots. Once I clear up my workbench and finish this custom Mando, I'll start digging into ways to strap/cover the boots a little better and make them more 'accurate'. Edit: Also I think those first boots will probably be fine, and if you're comfortable sanding them I'd say go for it. Just make sure you plan your attack run before making your trench run. I took a knife to a 30 dollar leather trenchcoat this weekend and may have removed more material than I needed to. I'll make it work, but just be sure of every cut.
  19. Thoughts: 1: I'm not a big fan of the sole detail on the side in all honesty, and if you wanted to get the lines to match, they don't for that one. Conversion would work pretty well with a strap but again the thick heels and designs on the side. 2: The straps look nice but those rivets would be a paint to get rid of, and the stamped polo is kind of a bummer. The soles are better though. 3: Same issues here, I like the taller boot better 4: Get rid of the straps and the metal plate and you might be on to something, you could do a big silver band in line with the lines of the source material and get some more security, but in losing the ankle strap you'd have an awfully loose boot. 5: The closest one so far in my opinion, even with the toe shifter it's a minor detail that wouldn't be bad. Any rider would probably ID the boot pretty quickly though. 6: My favorite of the bunch minus the stamp on the heel, I'd work to buff that out, and replace the strap to not have the rivets. It'd be the best candidate for doing a silver band/strap across like what I've been toying with in my head and with what DarthBrute mentioned at one point in his build. What I wear: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_06707316000P?lid=IExTrans_ItemNumber_link&rioptype=SRS&sid=IEx20130103TransSearsShipConfirmation&eml= The ankle strap has been cut, carved down into the seam, and the white band in the middle painted over. I'm working on the idea of doing a silver band across the top but at the moment am hardcore in the middle of another build I'm trying to crank out before the upcoming banquet.
  20. Hah! Rules? What rules? Plus, I don't see your name on the thread annnnnnd, you're building it. I probably speak for most - all when I say it's awesome he wants to get in on the fun and we'd love to see the progress!
  21. I was able to color match pretty well using some boltgun metal and black paint from my 40k minis when I recently extended the existing straps for my ring. I just mixed it until it was close enough and blended.
  22. Not playing currently, but fyi, am installed and a sub for another 30 days. Prophecy of the Five: Tagion 55 Sorc Crepit 55 Marauder Teigin 51 Powertech Stilence 50 Sniper Vareeji 41 Jedi Guardian Idemic 38 Scoundrel Ague 11 Commando Eansing 10 Jedi Assassin-thing
  23. I'm glad that Rob was able to help you out with that. And great initiative on working to make stuff fit. No real comment at this point other than keep up the good work. If something gives you trouble feel free to ask, myself or one of our other folks here will probably jump at the opportunity to help out. Otherwise, congrats on getting your armor and welcome!
  24. Really I'd just want to see a shot of you with the hood in the right spot. Would want to see sides and back and maskless just for the sake of it but fix-wise, just the hood from what I can see at the moment, would definitely be happy to stamp this one quickly.
  25. I'm no fabric pro, Aysel is probably a much better pro in that area. Other than the red drape, most of the fabric you see is with a little texture and a decent amount of breathability. The lighter fabric is still super hot in the heat, but better than say... a velvet royal guard. (Friend of mine today was dying out there). With a lighter fabric if you need cold gear, you can get warmer gloves, and throw a few layers UNDER your normal "under" gear. I've worn heavy pants, and extra shirts, and surprisingly, the armor is a great wind block and as you'll find, is also really great at keeping IN heat. Your core will stay relatively warm, whether you want it to or not.
