KOTOR Nihilus Reference/CRL questions

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker, first thread posting!

Have watched a number of the DN build threads and like a lot of the ideas people have come up with when creating their own costumes. I love a personal touch in these things.

Have organised boots, skull mask, blackout mask, sabre already and have been researching and considering the material options open to us.

I've been looking at the materials being used, and considered whether a KOTOR might be able to use different fabrics, so long as the finish was similar. Many of the reference pictures have a different "tightness" to the arms, chest etc which could (arguably) be material finish. I'm still looking through the fabrics at my local stores to narrow this down, but as the CRL says all 1 material, I need to consider my options.

On that note - it it just me, or do some of the pictures seem to show that the chest is in some way "armoured" or "padded" with loose partially transparent material over the top? Have linked one of the 2 best images I've seen of this below.

Along with the above, the shoulders seem raised from the extension of the arm - that is, the chest and shoulders look padded and raised from where the body would be.

So, I guess to end my musings and start getting to the point:

1. Would a KOTOR Nihilus be considered with different fabric parts (cloak, sleeves) if the finish was a (practically identical) colour match, but the material clung, hung, more like the reference pictures?

2. Has anyone considered padding/armouring the chest/shoulders under cloak - under the outermost layer of fabric- to create the correct shape/size to the reference pictures?

3. Would these additions/specialisations be considered some kind of a formal/elite costume base?

Musings, musings.....If only I could sew! Testing the waters, as the time I intend to spend getting the above features correct is to be considered. I still wish to be approvable via 501st channels so want to stay in those guideline also.

Would be very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on the above!

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

You have a very good point about the padding of the chest. It kinda looks like that to me. As for the shoulder, that would be easy to do without shoulder pads. It is simply a bunching of material. I had a similar look when I was trying on my COTF Nihilus cape. That just means there is a great deal of material under each side of the cape, making for a more flowing cape. But, that's just my impression.

As for material, I picked up Silk Noir for my COTF because, and I am not kidding, it was cheaper than any form of cotton. It flows well and breathes well. Heck, if I do a cold winter troop, I will probably have to wear some kind of thermals under it (and I am using the entire 22 yards for my single costume).

Hi,

Welcome to posting, it's more fun than lurking! Sorry it took me a while to respond. You've got some good questions in your post.

1. Yes, different kinds of fabric are okay as long as they look very similar in texture and color.

2. Yes, the chest IS definitely padded. Somebody recently pointed out to me that a section of the outer tunic description is missing in the standards... somehow a few lines were deleted when it was posted. I need to fix that! The most popular padding is high loft quilt batting, though I've also seen one fellow insert a sculpted "armor" piece under his tunic and that looked pretty good, too.

3. Flagship doesn't have elite standards. Make it the best you can, and be proud of your work! We'll all appreciate your efforts as well, and we'll enjoy seeing your progress.

Happy costuming!

I sat down to rewrite the missing piece of the Nihilus description, then had a "duh" moment and checked my backup files... and there it was, already in the updated CRL format. It was finished months ago, but I apparently failed to post the update. Sorry about that. The KOTOR version of Nihilus gets so little attention, he tends to get dusty.

So, the corrected standards are now posted with the complete description for the outer tunic.

Thanks Pam for your considerations!

Appreciate your efforts and opinion.

KOTOR DN gets the attention he deserves, now off to my build!

Will post my build as it progresses.
