Hello all,

Sisk here. Does anyone have any tips for me? I think I've kept up with all the standards so far pretty well. Everything is there, except boots and gloves which are on the way, and fasteners.

Tattering still needs to be done, and final touches still need to finished, but i have not done so until I get the boots and gloves. Just in case.

It's possible that it's reflective because of the flash of the digi cam. But, it definitely has a very rough look, and even looks sort of damaged. I was told to use natural sunlight, which for the past week would be very hard. It's been rainy since Monday. :(

Hi,

It looks like you used two different kinds of fabric. The fabric used for the obi sash and the bottom "skirt" down by your feet looks like a better Nihilus material. The material used for the rest of the costume is too shiny. There is a chance that the fabric may have been called "raw silk" in the store, but it's definitely not the same raw silk material that has been used by the other Nihilus costumers. Your material looks like a satin finish, like the material used in special occasion dresses. The raw silk, or silk noir, used by Nihilus costumers has absolutely no shine at all, and it has an extremely rough texture. It looks very worn, and goes well with the tattered look of the costume. It shouldn't be shiny, not even with a flash or bright sunlight.

I think what you've done so far can be used to help you design the costume (most of us make a practice "muslin" version of our costumes before we make the real thing), but I do not think it would be approved as the final material.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the hood is not a seperate piece from the cape. The hood IS a part of the cape. It goes over the head, comes forward to tie in a large knot in front, and goes back over the shoulders to hang to the ground.

The belt needs to have a second layer behind it. Like the Jedi belts, it should have a wide belt that is topped by a thinner belt. You have the thin belt... now you just need the base for it. I would suggest using leather belt blanks from a store such as Tandy Leather; they will give you a more sturdy look than vinyl.

I would also suggest that you trim the bottom skirt up a bit. To have it hanging on the ground so much will be an invitation for tripping. Many of our Nihilus costumers find stairs, curbs and escalators to be deadly hazards!

Hi hi, Darth Shiny wouldn't be very intimidating. ^^ Or you could go as Darth Nih-Disco-lus (you can keep the old garments and add stuff like a 70s hairform and plateau shoes *g*).

To bring up a stupid question: Do you use the right side of the fabric? It coulda be possible that the inner side isn't such shiny. I've stumbled over many fabrics here which used to be shiny just on one side.

That would be an epic confrontation. "We meet at last. My greatest enemy. The one that nobody of my kind can stand. The one to whom so many stumbled an fall. Make your peace with the wood and meet your doom, stairs!" (I know, that Nihilus can't talk, but otherwise, nobody could understand what I'm writing.)

Both sides of the material are the same. I never thought of the material as shiny though, only in the pictures does it look to have sort of a sheen. I dont know... :(

Hopefully this would help too.

That's the truth.
