  1. Concerning your question about the tattoos: to be honest I used the action figure. Another option may be if you happen to have a copy of the clone wars cartoons you could find some good reference of the back of asajj's head. I've never seen a template for the tattoos. The times I've had them, I had an artist paint or draw them on. It did seem to go on easier with the paint. If need be, I might be able to dig some of the back of my head pictures, but if you have access to a figure that was what I based mine on. Good luck with it. And it looks like you are doing a great job so far.
  2. First I'd just like to say that your first go with the makeup is worlds better than mine was. I think the boots should be fine with a descrete zipper. I agree adding buckles will look good. As to the fabric for the lighter area for the top: it doesn't nessicarily need to be knit though mine happens to be. I used a horizontal striped light gray knit. As to a prosthetic adhesive, I used Ben Nye before I became more aerodynamic . If you would like to see how I made various parts of my coutum, you could check out my build thread at: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1188
  3. The fabrics you've selected so far look good. As to your questions, I don't know of a specific pattern. What I would do is go to a local fabric store and look threw what they have in the pattern books, find something similar and make modifications as needed. Though since you are using a local semstrist, she can probably help you with that. As to the specific Sizes of things you wanted to know. That will vary from person to person based on her particular size. I like to use the distance of the nose to the eyebrows as a unit of measure, but you could use other body parts as well. So see how long the various parts are on Asajj, then use the same mesurement using you wife's proportions. I hope this helps
  4. You can upload the pictures to an external sorce like photo bucket then link them here. I can't say for sure about the zipper without looking at it. If it's subtle then probably not.
  5. It is coming along nicely. I hope you're able to attach the neck to shoulder armour alright. If you have any questions on the make-up and tats do tell I'd be happy to share what has worked for me. The templates my husband uses can be found here: http://mcapell3d.com/images/AsajjTats.pdf We print them at 100% on thick paper and cut out the black and then use a wedge to apply thick black make-up.
  6. It is hard to see in the small thumbnail, can you post a link or larger image?
  7. Indeed well said Krista. For me I do like the proposal that those who were involved in Sithly things retain their SL and other Dark Siders are DS. That would result in one of both for my costumes, and that would be fine. I'll be ok either way as noted, but I like that compromise if it could be called that. I can provide sources for my character if we come to that.
  8. Happy to help. I agree that the neck armor is one of the the most difficult things to figure out. I remade mine either 3 or 4 times. It was frustrating, but eventually I got it right. I agree that sort of thing is so much easier with a mannequin. One thing I did was make a cast of my torso by wearing a tight shirt (one you're willing to ruin) then covering it with duct tape (you'll need help for this). After that you cut a slit down the back so you can take it off, then tape it back together and stuff it like a pillow. It's a poor man's mannequin, but I loved how I could try stuff on it and stick pins in it and so on. The other thing I did to figure out the shirt itself was to wear a fitted shirt, draw on it, then cut it apart to use as the patten. Good luck with finishing the belt. I look forward to seeing pictures.
  9. I did the set of 4 together as one template. Then a set of 2 slightly smaller ones for the face. If you try to just do one single triangle you're more likely to smear the first ones you put on trying to do the latter ones and they might not be exactly parallel with each other. I've never tried it that way, but I could see it becoming a mess.
  10. Use a template. It is much easier then trying to free-hand. My husband designed them on the computer, printed them our, then cut them out with a utility knife. Then we used a wedge to apply the black. Let me know if you want me to find the template or you can make your own.
  11. Sorry I've been not around to answer questions for a while. There are some things in this tread I can add too, but I noticed they were written a long time ago and I'm not sure if my advise would be useful at this point or not (if you've already successfully made them). I have no useful advice to add to bald cap application. I ended up shaving after my first attempt without a professional on hand. That might be a bit drastic, though it does make doing the costume easier. If you want to go that rout, I recommend getting some high quality wigs and/or get use to people staring. If you do however have additional questions about the shirt, belt, neck armor, etc. ask and I'll do my best to give useful advice.
  12. I had a series of rings that I added a cross-bar to the back of and sewed the one side of the belt to the crossbar. the unattached side loops over and through and is secured by Velcro. I recommend against the self-adhesive Velcro. The glue dissolved and bleed out after one photo shoot and had to be painstakingly sewed back on after cleaning the material. My build thread has images if you'd like to look. http://alpinegarrison.com/viewtopic.php ... 4&start=15
  13. Now more than 2 years later, I have finally gotten my Nightsister Ventress submitted. I was essentially done more than a year ago, but lost or had stolen an important piece. What do you all think? Alas the image restrictions are remarkably small so I cannot post them... but I can link Now more than 2 years later, I have finally gotten my Nightsister Ventress submitted. I was essentially done more than a year ago, but lost or had stolen an important piece. What do you all think?
  14. I agree. The under part of the arms should be black or dark gray from the shirt. The same as the sides. With the statue as with many action figures they sometimes change or simplify things for easier production, which is why they are not idea as a primary source. I did mine with a darker grey horizontally striped shirt and built the lighter parts on top as armour.
  15. The costume looks great and you do an excellent job on the bald cap. Now you just need to work on the proper scowl.
  16. I'm thinking larger would be better. Sorry, I know it is really hard to find a large enough belt buckle for this costume. After looking for many months, I ended up using a combination of bathtub fixture, a ring from a horse's saddle, and towel holder ring myself. I know it sounds weird, but the results look good. Good luck with whatever you do.
  17. I agree that the skirt looks great. Regarding the ring size: Based on your specs it sounds big enough, but to really make a determination, I'd like to see a pic of you holding it in proper placement perhaps wearing the skirt and a fitted top. That sort of thing is best determined by proportioning the item to the individual wearing it. For example if you were larger you would want a larger buckle if you were tinny then something smaller will work best. Regarding the ring style: Yes I think it would work if you could carefully file off the marking on the ring and yes it would involve a lot of work. It would definitely look more elegant then the backside. I would attempt that first. Still using it in revers may be the easier option. You'd just need to file off the brand info, but before doing that, I would make sure that it will sit right on you. From the pictures, it looks like the ring might taper. And I do like that you posted larger pictures of the buckles. Especially when you apply it is good to be able to see the details I hope this is helpful. Good luck, it's looking good so far.
  18. I just have to say I love the boots. and it looks like you did a really good job on the makeup and bald cap. Just some additional suggestions I have for improvements: the buckle should be silver. I might suggest using rub n buff. Also I agree with Kathryn that the collar should be tacked down. Finally if you would like some help keeping the shirt pulled tight. have look at my build thread viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1188 (the clips near the bottom of the page).
  19. The blue eyes are from the 3D animation. Before that she had "normal" eyes (black and white, sometimes brown in the comics) or solid white. http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images ... rkJedi.jpg http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images ... charge.jpg
  20. Good advise shared, thanks ladies. What is the black neck/chest armour made of? Particularly since you have it over the shoulder, it would be best to be something flexible. (I used spandex which had a leatherish sheen to it) It is sewed down to the shirt. This Ventress can be over the shoulder or not, so based on what you have, pick what works best. Dimensions of the buckle should be more proportionate to the wearer, rather than a certain number of centimeters. I'd recommend looking in hardware stores. Check in the bathroom section, things such as bathtub fixtures. My buckle is made of 3 parts. One is from a washcloth ring, another from a bathtub fixture, and a third ring I found off of a horse saddle closure. As to the makeup, the alcohol based stuff is great. What I use is a Ben Nye cake foundation. The colors are Geisha mixed with Porcelain. This I apply with a slightly wet natural sponge (better for avoiding streaks). Then set with baby powder. The tattoos are made with a Graftobian creme foundation color: Black (also set with powder). I also use a fixative spray to prevent drips or smears. I cannot speak for bald caps as my first and last attempt to do a bald cap on my own resulted in my being bald. I hope this give you a start. Do tell if you have further questions.
  21. Leather makes that tricky. I would test some sections of velcro or carefully placed snaps. The key is it needs to not be stressed so it doesn't pull and change the shape of the neck armour. If velcro works I'd recommend having the soft side on the shirt so it doesn't get caught on things in the wash. Did you GML pass on the notes, there were a couple other things lacking from the CRL. If not do tell and I can share.
  22. I'm coming with a Ventress or two, but wasn't planning on bringing a compressor. I believe you can purchase spay cans of compressed air though. Like this: http://www.fineartstore.com/Catalog/tab ... 2Cunitcost

congrats I look forward to seeing you at CVI
  24. Some good responses. obscurity can be a bit relative. When I first trouped in my Asajj Ventress, the MC at the event went down the row having the kids say what character they thought we were. They started on me with Leah...Padme....and by the time they got to the Emperor, I decided it was time to just move along. I still enjoyed myself and in the kids' defense, it was my first go with the costume. I can't speak for imperial gunners, but as Thomas was saying, on many an occasion, I've have parents say "Who are you?" only to be rebuked by their kid with "Mom/Dad that's Ventress." As though it should be clear to all. Michael and I enjoy a lot of the less recognized characters and the challenge/process of translating ink and comic references into fabric and forms. In the RL Michel does Corran Horn. 9 times out of 10 he is referred to as Obi-wan. (ok to be honest its closer to 99 out of 100). Typically, he smiles and nods or has a conversation with them to explain who he is. But on the handful of occasions when someone does recognize him, it can be fun. One such said, "Oh that's so cool! You're Corran Horn, He's my favorite character." In the end if you're going to do it, do it for yourself and the joy of sharing with others.
