  1. I agree with Sakara -- I'd go with black, or maybe even a dark grey. It's hard to find a good reference shot of her fingernails Anyone have the sideshow or gentlegiant figure?
  2. Okay, I'm totally curious, which sabers did you buy? I had considered the possibility of modifying a Maul saber set, but when I took a look at my friend's Maul sabers I decided the straight hilts were just too long for my little hands. I was just surfing around to see if anyone had come up with Ventress sabers yet, especially since Hasbro is releasing a FX Dooku saber and Ventress is more in the mainstream due to the new Clone Wars, and I came across this by Ultra Sabers LLC: The website is http://www.ultrasabers.com/product_p/uk-tempest.htm These really look cool!! They have a coupler to join the 2 hilts together, so you can use them separately or as one I think they would need some customizing to make them look more like Ventress' sabers, but this is the closest thing I've found readily available at a decent price. I must say I'm very tempted to spend money I don't have...
  3. ladyb, PM sent. Thank you for your input. It is true, I don't feel I've found just the right fabric yet and will keep looking. The back side of the spandex is exactly like the front, but that is a great idea and I will keep it in mind as I hunt. I'm planning to do some fabric shopping in Montreal (fashion and haute couture is bigger there) at the end of the month, so hopefully I'll find that "a-ha!" fabric I'm looking for. I'm thinking this spandex would only be good as a last resort.
  4. So while I did have fun with my CW Ventress costume I made last year, I would really love to make a "sash belt" Ventress and have started doing my research. I have a question about the following standard: Shirt: * The form-fitting shirt must have long sleeves. * The shirt should be made of an off-white or pale gray matte stretch material. Slightly darker gray stripes may be included. Okay, so the fabric should be off-white or pale grey in colour, matte and stretchy. I have been able to find a pale grey spandex fabric in a local fabric store that might do the trick. However, because it is spandex and not a blend with spandex in it, the fabric has a slight sheen in it - not turly sparkly or shiny, but not entirely flat matte either. For those who helped hammer out the standard, and anyone else, any thoughts on whether this fabric would be acceptable?
  5. Again, assuming you are wanting your costume to be cleared for 501st membership, you will need to follow the costume standards described for the AoTC concept version here. To make a fuller skirt, you will have to increase the amount of fabric going around your hips, at least doubling if not triplling or quadrupling the amount. How much fabric you use will depend on what kind of fabric you've got. If you need a pattern, looking for something like this might be a good starting point: This could be easily modified to accomdate the skirt opening over the front of the thighs.
  6. Hey DF, in looking over the pics in the costuming standards for VM compared to the pics you've posted, personally I think the grey paint you've got is a little too light to get a subtle effect. I'm wondering if using a grey that is only a few shades lighter than black would be better? I know you wanted to have your other project done for our event next week, but rather than try to rush and get that or VM done, it might be worth it to just take your time and get it just the way you want then to be unhappy and waste your $$. There will always be another big event to troop at
  7. Oooo, this is quite nice! I really like how you did the wraps on the arms, torso, and I think I even spy a foot too in the first pic
  8. Well, here's another for you! This is a great tutorial, thank you so much for making this available Your instructions are clear and reading about your experience when making this costume will be very helpful for me when I tackle my next project. But I'm thinking in terms of my new Ventress costume - the info about working with PVC (Ventress collar, bracers and boot extensions) and the excellent tips about how to add the piping (for the shirt) is very much appreciated!
  9. I really like the boots you've got pictured here, I really like the wedge heel. Can you tell me where you got them? I must say, you've definitely inspired me to revist the Ventress character and work on another costume!
  10. oh..my...godds...WOW! Pardon me, I'm drooling
  11. VERY nice! Once again, I am envious
  12. The Woochie bald cap is what I used. It seems to be the most commonly available one, as my local costuming supply store doesn't carry anything else.
  13. Excellent! I debuted my Ventress at Toronto's FanExpo this past weekend and have learned absolutely tons about doing a bald cap and water-based makeup. I will do my best to write up some stuff and post pics in the new forum in the next week or so. Here's a pic:
  14. I did a "dry run" of the makeup for my Ventress costume last night and found it to be very much a learning experience! I think I'll have to try a few more things before Saturday's con. I followed previous advice provided in another thread to blot the liquid makeup (water-based) on with a sponge first and then airbrush it afterwards, which worked very well. I have a latex bald cap to wear and we put castor seal on the bald cap thinking it would help the makeup blend better, but it didn't - I'm guessing it was because oil and water don't mix I ended up with blank spots where the paint wouldn't stick to the latex, and a streaky look over most of the cap. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to the bald cap to make it look less fake (i.e. smooth) and more like skin? I was wondering if blotting on liquid latex with a sponge might be an option?
