  1. It's always interesting trooping as a character that most con attendees/casual Star Wars fans have likely never seen or heard of. Every so often, someone from outside of the Legions recognizes me as Darth Maladi (which *almost* makes my cold, dark, sithy heart happy). Otherwise, I've gotten Darth Talon (quite a few times), Darth Maul, Hellboy, and "that devil chick". My personal favourite, courtesy of an adorable ~3 year old girl in an Elsa costume: "Are you a ladybug?"
  2. Regarding the headpiece, I made a wire frame, basically filled it in with duct tape, melted and stretched a sheet of EVA foam all over the outer-facing surface, cut shapes out of a second layer of foam and hot glued it onto the first, sealed it all together with mod podge... it ended up being pretty sturdy yet pliable, but what a royal pain in the butt to make! A couple other people used mouldable plastic - I'd probably go that route instead, to save yourself a lot of time and frustration. (I'm a poor student who had to go low budget out of necessity ) I think the fabric I used for the shirt was fairly standard upholstery leatherette. I bought three or four yards just in case, but I didn't end up using all of it. Pleather is definitely not the easiest stuff to work with, though. I had to go through A LOT of trial and error to get it to look right and to fit me, since I had to improvise my own pattern. On that note, if you have access to an adjustable sewing dummy, or even a friend with similar measurements who is willing to model, that would make the process so much easier than modelling everything off yourself. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out. I'm not on here all that often, so I could pm you with my facebook messenger if you'd like. Cheers xx
  3. Update: after nearly a year of work (not to mention reworking nearly everything and constantly asking myself why the !@#$ I ever decided to do this in the first place), she's finally approved!
  4. Thanks! I happened to agree on the hip wrap - I myself wasn't satisfied with how it looked, so I ended up redoing it with better materials. I also reworked the belt and the lightsaber hilt. As for skin colouring, I don't personally like the look of painted bodysuits - to me it looks like overly crepey skin, even though it would save me quite a bit of prep time on expo days. I decided to suck it up and just use paint. As it stands, though, she's pretty much ready to go and is now awaiting GML approval.
  5. Hey everyone, I'm close to finishing my Darth Maladi build I've been working on for the better part of a year. There are still a few tweaks I need to make, but I'd love to get some feedback before I go ahead with the body painting and approval process. Here's basically what it looks like put together (excuse the poor-quality photos and the bathroom mirror selfie... ugh...). The collar piece is still in progress and therefore isn't in the photo. I plan on adding some sort of black fabric to the inside of the leather sleeve wraps, as the fabric I used was upholstery pleather with white meshy stuff on the back. The belt still needs to be fixed - at the moment it's just fastened on with a safety pin, and it looks messy. Not sure whether or not I need to redo the silver hip wrap. Here's what the shirt looks like from the back: The crown/headpiece - I've fixed the weathering a bit since I took this photo. Lightsaber hilt, take 1: I made this out of painted oven-bake clay, based on the Vong coral designs used for most of the Legacy-era Sith lightsabers. I'm not entirely happy with this, so I plan on redoing it and slimming it down a bit. I do have a red saber blade I plan on using with it. Let me know what you think. This is my first time doing any sort of cosplay though, so don't be too brutal! May the Force be with you all.
