  1. I see no problem with a female starkiller at all, I doubt you'd find much fan bias if you do it well. I think pam pretty much covered the rule aspect already. lol
  2. LMAO that was not what I expected at all, here I was thinking "wow, this high compliment coming from Thomas himself, who did such a miraculous job as to win his praise?" I almost fell out of my chair laughing!
  3. Mine is similar to that with a hair band instead of a hard hat and flimsy plastic instead of cardboard. beyond that the only difference is I used another U shaped piece of plastic to extend down from the back side to keep it from doing that inward curve. I bought a plastic folder at the dollar store to make mine, really it just takes some ingenuity and practice. (If I remember I'll take some pics of mine, but I have a horrid habit of forgetting...)
  4. WOW! Beautiful start! Don't forget your rivets on the chest pieces and the rust stain from the restraining bolt. Lightsaber is amazing! I look forward to watching your progress.
  5. A wonderful honor, congrats my friend! am I the only one that noticed the sithling holding up the cape before anything else though?
  6. I have one and I've considered using it especially for the settings on the cheap ones to make your voice deeper, but I've never worn it out. Let me know how it works for you...
  7. plastic bags huh? that's pretty ingenious. can you rip it off pretty easily or do you have bits get stuck?
  8. very nice, are you going to do something like this for the hand plate too?
  9. we're going to do this aren't we? we're going to over analyse a mini bust. the brow stripes look angry, they should be roughly parallel
  10. I don't know enough about the source to tell you how it looks as far as accuracy goes, but from a general tailor's standpoint that is a beautifully made costume! Well Done!
  11. correct me if I'm wrong but should there be a second option for the back plate before the armor starts to grow on him? I seem to remember pictures in earlier comics with a smaller less spikey back plate...
  12. dear lord, tell me they're selling or contesting these... Very cool references, thanks! Too bad the costume was never used in the game... EDIT: Damn, apparently there was a contest or two, but exclusive to UK and currently over...
  13. thanks for asking the question on behalf of everyone interested in these - I'd love to hear Thomas's take on starkiller in TFU2 because I love that pilot coat (although I know he'd just say if you want to do it, do it, not because it's accepted or not), but I have to point out that that picture isn't acurate at all - just a brief glance at the first skin and I can tell you the shoulder is wrong, the belt is wrong, the vest is wrong, and the skirt is wrong - so please whatever you do don't use this as your guide to making any of these costumes - gather other references first.
  14. Glad to hear it! Congratulations!
  15. heh, I'm too busy trying to finish my jango fett right now (which will be my new primary costume). I agree thought that it is a really cool outfit. part of me just wants to make the jacket alone I'll be watching any progress you make with great interest
  16. I like it! 2 suggestions - belt still needs to hand down a little on the saber side on a diagonal. If possible the ribbed shirt should be tucked in the obi - it's not imperative because it was only noticable in one pic, but I'd still like to see it layered appropriately. Beyond that (and those are purely in how you wear it) I really like it, and I can't wait to see you finish. Keep up the good work!
  17. that's pretty much how mine looks... was it your local GML that said this? Thomas can correct me on this, but it doesn't look like it ever went throught the EU review thread...

wow... I'm really impressed. keep up the awesome work and I look forward to seeing it completed!
  19. let me demonstrate - aside from a little color and the belt, most of the references are identical so I'll use my reference pic here I've marked the outline of each armor piece in the light green and the curvature in the dark green. I've also marked what I mean about the obi being wrinkled - yes I meant vertically, bunch it from the top and bottom to achieve the wrinkled look. now, purely from the reflection off of it, it looks like yours has no curves and looks like one complete sheet hidden behind a small tongue of vinyl/leather. Mine was split up into individual pieces like I've marked, but the curves were very simple, closely resembling yours.I'd suggest you split it up and do your best to give it some shape to more closely resemble the picture.
  20. First off, welcome to the star wars costuming world! Let me be the first to say that here you will get some of the best constructive criticism anywhere. Don't let yourself get discouraged by all that we say about your costume. For a first try it looks really good and you should be proud of it. With that said, it does need some work to match the "just walked off the screen" look the 501st shoots for. I can put in some thoughts but let me give you fair warning that, as someone who is also working on this costume, I'm going to point out a LOT of things you can make better. Spats - I like your boot spats - thats basically the way I did mine - don't change them. Belt - I'm not sure where you were going with this, you have the two buckles but they need to be silver, not sure where you came up with the 12 belt adjusters because I don't see any similarity between them and the references. Obi (waist sash) - you have also seen this as a leather-esque material so I'm glad I'm not alone in that judgement, however you have it too straightened. both rerefences (as well as the one I used) show it as gathered and wrinkled - there's not much you can do about that in creating it, it's just a change in how you wear it. skirt - I think you're white parts are a bit wide - they're supposed to taper more at the tips like claws or fangs. Also the border is (on mine) 3/4" - 1" (1.8cm-2.5cm roughly). Gloves - they don't look bad, don't get me wrong, but in addition to Sith Lords I also have a Tusken outfit - and one of the worst things about it is the gloves. I can't grip anything because they're just so big. I think you're going to have the same problem. might want to look into some that are a little tighter. Cape/hood - I like it, but you don't have a lot of good pictures of it Vest - I like the ribbing. It's not the way I chose, but it works. last but not least are 2 problems I ran into that I think you're going to have similar issues with. I'm going to repost something Thomas Spanos wrote about mine that was very eloquent and should give you an idea of what I see - So I think you similarly will have issues with the chest plate (looks like just one) being too flat and the underside of your shoulder armor sheets (the leather portion) showing the white underneath. Again, please don’t let this discourage you – I let the first reactions to my Nihilus put it on hold for 2 years. You have a good start – it just needs a little more work. Good luck and I look forward to your joining the Legion!
  21. got some fixes back from Thomas, 1. Shave my face (if you see this Thomas, I'd like to note unfortunately I had to cut my long hair in October, I'm now down to 1/8th inch buzz) 2. Make the armor have more depth and curvature 3. hide the white lining of the faux leather with a lining (I think he was pointing out the sleeves but I know there's one or two seams I had trouble hiding.) @Daritha - yeah, I expected the shirt to pick up more flash thinking the lightness in the pics was mostly a camera effect as opposed to a light fabric. The holster kinda blends in on the waist sash, but it is there and it actually comes to a tapered corner at the hip where the lightsaber goes. it was hard to recreate but I think it worked well =D
  22. mine's kinda complicated and long: I got into Star Wars thanks to my dad when I was a kid (he says he created a monster) I got into costuming thanks to my mom who would make me a halloween costume every year. When she died, I used the complete focus I seemed to have while sewing to get my mind off of her death (I still seem to use it to that end). I dress up in other costumes, from Video Games like Assassin's Creed to comic books characters like Deadpool and Rorschach, but thanks to the existence of the 501st - an actual group devoted to the creation of costumes from Star Wars, it ended up taking most of my time. When I first submitted for the 501st, I did so with a Nihilus that was really subpar. Looking back, Thomas was really nice about it, but at the time I was disheartened and upset, and I changed costume plans repeatedly until I ended up with the most basic tusken you can imagine and joined in 2007. Since then, (and thankfully) I have updated my Tusken and my Nihilus to meet the 501st standards that I once loathed, and now love. I do notice now when I do non Star Wars costumes that I really long for the constructive criticism I can get within the Star Wars community. I still turn to my local squad for opinions on my other costumes when I have the chance.
  23. Ah, well there ya go! You're right, it is simmilar. Got the fabric I need for the gaiter/spats but haven't made any progress - too busy with work.
  24. @Mad Horizons - I've never played KOTOR so I'll have to take your word for it I actually used my Jedi Knight pattern I've had for years and modified it a bit for the extra long crossover and the kama part. @Daritha - Yeah, gotta do the arm brace things, boot spats, and from what I can tell a grey collar. still a bit to go but it's comming along. my dad was a photographer so he has to have everything perfect, it's faster to just use my phone if I want a progress pic
  25. This costume is one of those "blink and you'll miss it" costumes, but when I first played the game I really loved it more than some of his others. I'm not sure if I'll submit it for 501st when I'm done, but I figured this was the best place to put it and get some feedback from some of the costumers I trust the most. I have a tutorial for Hoth Rebel Trooper "gaiters" thanks to "Schyph Gochi" over at the RL which looks VERY similar to the boots he wears. I went with an off-white because the pic from the menu looks tanish with a grey sash but I may try to bleach it. I think I need to switch my black pants out for my brown ones. other than that I need the arm thing and add a grey collar/dicky. without further adeu, here's the costume thusfar: and here's some reference pics I'm using: What do you guys think so far? does the sash need to be wider?
