  1. With the unlimited sources for characters and costumes that are available in the Star Wars Universe, it might be a bit overwhelming to understand what actually constitutes a reference source that is acceptable for 501st approval. I'll try to make it as easy to understand here.

The current 501st requirements for references to be used to support new to Legion costumes states that it MUST be from an OFFICIAL source. Multiple official references can be combined to add up to a complete, 360° view of the character/costume so long as the references are all of the same version of the costume/character, and details that are present in the multiple references used do not change between one another. This means that if it has been released by LFL, is licensed by LFL, or has the approval of LFL, it can be used. If you can find a single source that shows a 360° view (a single comic, screenshots of an NPC in a video game, a highly detailed, full body statue, etc), then it is fine to use so log as it is an official release. Examples of these sorts of references include:

    -comics/graphic novels

    -phone/video games

    -toys/figures

    -full statues

-official "concept" sketches by approved artists

    -animated show screenshots

-posters/marketing materials (great as supportive references but generally will not be able to be used as a single source)

Just remember that the less detailed a reference is, the more references you want to use in order to support the 360° view requirement. Book covers are generally not a good idea unless they are combined with other references that match the character/costume version you want to make. If two references of the same version have inconsistencies in details, use the higher quality reference of the two so there is as little interpretation needed to explain the details. Absolutely NO fan art is acceptable for references, but we do not discourage the building of them for personal wearing! This includes sketches, paintings, custom figures, custom statues, etc. Descriptions of characters in books are also not acceptable as they offer no visual clarification, often change (even under the same author), and are too open to interpretation.

The  "consistency in references" point gets a bit tricky with sources like comics and graphic novels where different artists can create different details from issue to issue, with even the same artist creating variations from panel to panel within the same comic. In this case, it is a good idea to gather all of the references you can for the version you want to do, and create a "majority" list of details that are consistent across the references. If there is a pocket in 8 out of 10 reference images and 2 references do not have it, it is safe to assume by the "majority" rule that there should be a pocket. If it is an even balance of pockets and no pockets, it can be put to your discretion on if you want to have the pocket or not, so long as you can support your reasoning in the approval process.

Cover art is a great way to manage this issue as they are, for the most part, far more detailed and thorough in their portrayal of characters and costumes since more time is places on them than any single panel within the comic. The same goes for statues and figures.

I hope this is helpful in getting an idea about references!

  2. To elaborate on the XO's great detail on references, so long as it has shown up in SOMETHING that was given the thumbs up by Star Wars and LFL, it will work, and so long as the combined references for the version of the costume you want to build are the same, and can all add up to an entire 360 degree view. That means if you use a comic that shows the front details and you find a sketch by an officially released artist that shows back details of the SAME version of the costume, you can piece them together to form one 360 reference. This is only applicable is the versions are the same and details that are present on both match up.

Also, the references can not be of a costume or character that is personalized in a video game. That means that Revan, as a stock playable character with a stock Dark Side armor set, is fine for approval, but my Togruta Sith Inquisitor that is in a customized outfit IS NOT eligible for approval. Now, if I make a stock Inquisitor armor set that matches one of the sets in game, with NO changes or customization to it, then it should be eligible as "Togruta Sith Inquisitor" is a stock NPC form in the game.

That is the difficult part of older characters, because they rarely ever have full 360 degree references to support approval of the costume, BUT, I will say that you should never let the lack of official references limit you making the costume, whether it can be approved for the 501st or not.

  3. Please take a moment to go and check out your profile to ensure that it is up to date! The Garrison area may have issues, but it is beneficial to have the correct TKID and 501st link in your profile.

Here are the directions to check and edit your complete profile from the desktop version.

    1. Go to your name in the top right corner, and click, "My Profile".

    2. At the top left of your profile page, click, "Edit Profile".

    3. Go to http://www.501st.com/members/searchform.php and type in your TKID.

    4. Click on, "more...." next to your name and copy the address at the top.

    5. Paste this address into the 501st link area of your TFE forum profile.

  4. Hi! I really love this costume, and it's a lot more forgiving of figure flaws than the Asajj Ventress I eventually want to build. It's also a lot less challenging than Captain Phasma (I'm 6'1" tall, so I *need* to build a Phasma at some point).

I'm really missing the ability to just drive down to the local Michaels or Joanns to buy whatever I need, though. Even after being here a year and a half, I'm still not used to the dearth of decent craft stores. It just feels alien to me.   :)

We don't call them, "figure flaws", we call them, "figure hurrahs". ;)

Don't ever think that a figure should limit the wearing of a costume (so long as social and public decency are still regarded and followed, of course). This goes for you too, Chris. I mean, you already have to shave for Makakili, right? :D

    Thanks!

  7. I now know this after all the research I've been doing with the character. I've been having issues with approval because different people have different interpretations of the CRL.

Yeah, the new CRL should be coming out here shortly with a clearer cut idea so as to keep everything more fluid and easier to understand.

  8. Redeemed Revan would not be eligible for 501st, but yes for RL as he is a good guy at that point (chaotic good, but good, none the less). It is correct that the Shadow of Revan version, which is the embodiment of the Dark Side within Revan, WOULD be eligible.

On the mask, no they would not be eligible for KOTOR as it is an entirely different design as seen below. The specifics are that the "nose" and "chin" areas are structurally different, and there is additional detail on the SWTOR version that is not on the KOTOR version in angles and cuts.

  9. The back of the CotF version was unknown and it got through using the KOTOR II model. There really isn't too many differences but there are differences. One could easily make the costume and try to apply.

COTF was also approved before current 360 rules were implemented and was an amalgamation of the box art, the minifig, and the inaccurately referenced Sith Legends figure that used parts of COTF but was not COTF, especially with its shoulder bells and split skirt style when it was still a rule of 3 for references. Technically, there should not have been an approvable COTF given that none of the references actually match and were combined in parts to make a single costume.

  10. Greetings! I would say that the current red stripes above the eyes are too wide horizontally and come off the mask too much. The profile that Chris Avellone intended for KOTOR II was one of slim and flush design, almost flat, and the game files for KOTOR II mimic this. For approval, I would say definitely reducing the two things I mentioned. Otherwise, it is a beautiful mask.

  11. The hard parts are good, but need modification for approval, including changing out the rings and adding straps to them to attach to the underside of the armor instead of the string used. The bracers should also be a single piece and not two pieces with velcro, but if you are willing to do a bit of work, this can be fixed with attaching the two pieces then doing a repaint. The hard part comes in getting the correct metallic effect since you have to repaint everything if you paint one piece. Combining antique gold, brass, and just a dusting of copper got the color I wanted, and I did all 3 while wet. I ended up building my own armor yet still using his mask, ab fabric, and belt/sash setup because he did a great job with it, the armor I had from him just didn't fit me as well as I'd like with my female shape and hips.

The soft parts need more work, and would be better getting the hard parts from MWA and soft parts from a tailor or seamstress so they are made correctly and just for you. The biggest issue is that the hood is supposed to be enclosed, but it is split, and very difficult to wear correctly to have that enclosed look and stay that way. The cape is good, the split skirt is moderate, just make sure you give a longer measurement so that the waist band is higher than your actual waist to it is completely covered by the armor and doesn't show under.
