    I would also point out your Obi seems a little wide. You may need to make it a little bit smaller. It should have an equal distance on either side of the belt that match the width of the belt. It looks like you have double the belt width on either side right now. 

     

    You may need to add additional lines to the padded arms as well. Each sewn line should be 1 inch apart, all the way around the sleeve. 

     

    So far it's looking great! You are very close to being done!

    I was wondering because I got denied because of it. Though in a lot of artwork and even other approved member's costumes it's hard to even see the extra tunic.

     

    COTF Nihilus needs to have the appearance of 2 tunics around the collar. Even if you just sew 1 layer. People have gotten this effect by sewing a second collar under the top one to make it look like there is a second tunic under there. It is a very easy addition to the outter tunic. You might need to add that and then re-apply.

    Nihilus wears 2 layers of tunics. You could sew just one tunic with the appearance of being 2 if you wanted to shed a layer and be cooler. As long as it looks right, there is no reason not to try this way. I have often thought about doing it as well since I get super warm in my costume. The trick would be keeping the volumous fabric look that you get from 2 layers with only 1.

    I used a light quilters cotton batting in between 2 layers of black fabric. Measure out the 1 inch lines on the inside of the sleeve (the side not going to be seen) if you need to. Then sew the three pieces together. Start with the line in the very centre and work your way out to the edge alternating between each side. This will keep the 3 pieces even so you don't end up with one side more screwed than the other.

     

    That is how I did my sleeves and it worked out well. Then just attach the sleeves to the inside tunic.

    Talked to my friends with 3D printers. They all say that, yes, it would be easy to print a Nihilus mask. You would just need a good 3D model to print it from. You could also print 1 mask and make a mold to cast more from, which would be the cheaper option. But you can just print a bunch of them as well.

    For the fabric, you will want something that drapes (hangs) nicely and has some decent weight to it. Most people go with Silk Noil (raw silk) or with a heavier linen. Depends on your budget and what you can find out there for fabric.

     

    I have a few friends with 3D printers, but I don't think any of them have though about printing a mask yet. I can ask them and see what they think.

    I made my mask and it was the longest, and hardest piece to make. I would recommend purchasing one since there are some great Nihilus mask makers out there. If you do want to give it a shot though, go ahead! I am really proud of the fact I made my mask, even though it was difficult. I went through 5 versions before my final one that I wear. I tried the Sculpy route and it was a disaster, so don't make your mask out of that. It is heavy and very fragile. I ended up making my base mask out of Sculpy and then moulding a lightweight mask on top of it out of acrylic medium. Not the most efficient way to make a mask, but it worked out.

     

    For the soft parts, I do take commissions, but be warned I am booked till the summer currently. So you would have to wait a while.

    Help with a Darth Nihilus wanted

    Hello Wolfgang!

     

    I have just been on vacation in Germany and Italy and loved my time there. Germany was beautiful! Now I'm back and catching up on my forum duties. I know a few different tailors and have asked them if any are currently open for commissions. As soon as I hear back from them, I will post up there info here.

     

    If you aren't in a hurry, I also take commissions for Nihilus robes. However I won't be able to make them until February 2015.

    There are 3 important things to consider when buying fabric; Weight, Drape and Stiffness. For Nihilus you will want something that has decent weight to it, and has good drape. But you don't want anything that is stiff. You will want something that hangs well when gathered up so that you get the nice billowy effect on the robes and cape. I went with a piano weave linen, which is similar to what costumers use to make Jedi inner robes. This is however expensive and warm fabric, but it does look amazing. Quite a few people here use Silk Noil (Raw Silk) fabric, which works really well.

    "We chose Black Raw silk, which is sometimes called Silk Noil, as the material for most of this costume. It has a rough, almost unfinished look to it as well as a semi-loose weave. This texture really helped with the shredding of the costume, as it allowed the threads to be more easily separated than they would be in a more tightly woven fabric. Because of my size and the many layers, the construction of this costume required nearly twenty yards of material, to provide the correct amount of drape and flow. We elected to purchase two bolts of black raw silk from Dharma Trading company for this, which is slightly more economical than purchasing the material by the yard."

    Your Nihilus is looking really good so far. I agree with Crimson that the skirt seems a little tight and should be more billowy. If you can sew an additional panel of fabric into it, that should help.

     

    It is also hard to tell from this picture, but are the sleeves quilted with 1 inch spacing? It doesn't look like there is any quilting, but it could just be the photo.

     

    Everything else looks fantastic! You are really close to being approvable.

    If you are accepted into the 501st Legion, then you are automatically placed into the Flagship Eclipse as this is your characters detachment.

    Hello Ewok Hunter,

     

    For the belt question, the model picture has not been updated with the accurate belt. It needs to be like the lone belt picture shown in the CRL further down. So the 8 black studs in pairs is correct.

     

    Yes, those gloves will work.

     

    MWA does a great Nihilus mask, there are a lot of Nihilus' in the legion with his work.

     

    Boots sound fine. Really only the toe ends up showing with all the long flowing robes anyways.

     

    It's correct you don't need the lightsaber for approval. Lightsabers are nice to have, but not needed. I would focus on getting the costume completed and approved and then look into getting a light saber. There are a few different places you can get custom ones made, but they can get quite pricey. Depends on how much you are willing to spend on one.
