    looking great there bud,

firstly, your boot don't appear to be high enough. the officer boots from sovietboots.com are a great knee high option and have a great heel in them as well.

there is also the absence of the 3 belts and buckles around the boots and the armour cap on the toe

the undershirt should be something of compression wear as it needs to be form-fitting to prevent blousing.

as for the hands, i still paint mine and apply nails every troop but look into welovecolors.com for some form-fitting gloves to make it easier. you can also apply nails to them with hot glue to make it easier.

the zipper on the vest should not be visible so a flap of leather secured with velcro is a good option.

the belt buckle and greeblies should be enclosed on the top and bottom so they don't have a 'hollow' look.

i cant really tell with these photos and there is arguments on the topic but for your approval pics, you'll need a dark brown (yeah, almost black) face paint. the baldcap should be seamless so liquid latex is a good way to blend it to your skin via stippling and layering it up

make sure the bicep armour sits up higher also as it should be at the bottom of the shoulder armour. (more around the bicep than the top of the elbow)

as with all costumes, it comes down to your GML's approval.

i hope this helps with your build. its looking fantastic

    JD,

Thank you for the awesome feedback. Here's a better pic of the boot and buckles. It sounds like they're too short, so I'll get on that! I was planning to start working on the toe caps tonight, but perhaps I'd better get the boots corrected, first. [Ignore those pants; they're what I wore to work today. :D ]

I see what you're saying about the undershirt - I'll get to work on that.

Thanks for the tip on the gloves!

That's a great tip on the greeblies and buckle. I'm actually a little embarrassed I didn't think of that. Easy fix, though!

Definitely - dark brown face paint and better bald cap application for the win. Is my yellow, um, YELLOW enough?

And yeah, I was losing patience with my bicep armor during this shoot. I think I've found a good solution, though.

Thanks again for all of your assistance! Your Savage is awesome and it inspired me to take on this challenging costume.

  2. Hello from Orange, CA. I am almost finished with my Savage Opress cosplay. I'm sharing my most recent photos to collect feedback before I submit my official photos.

    • My contacts were dried out, so I'm not wearing them in these pics.
    • I need to finish and install the armor on the boots, and weather my boots a bit.
    • I also need to find a good solution to keep my hands looking yellow. However, I think I'm almost done and I would appreciate your feedback.

My photos show a deviation from the CRL - the vest/armor is not black and silver as per the CRL. Instead, it is dark brown with weathered seams, which is more accurate to the Clone Wars version of the character. I've included a screenshot for reference. I would appreciate guidance on adding this variation to the CRL.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort. Savage wouldn't say it, but I will - May The Force Be With You!

Here's the thing: these are animated characters. There isn't just one right answer because these are like art; the reference can support a handful of interpretations.

The armor color is mottled, and is not just one color. I'll give an example of my favorite boots. These are black underneath, and the wax polish on top marked them look anything from grey to dark brown, but I know for a fact that the leather is black because I'm the one who put the polish on.

    m_59beedb5f0137d6456096adf.jpg

It is the weathering that dictates how people interpret it, but these are what they looked like when I bought them:

    716X6WaDu+L._UY500_.jpg

This is a real world translation of what the armor looks like in the cartoon.

Now to the CRL. It is an animated cartoon, and just like 99% of the rest of our CRLs in TFE, the colors change as much as the number of times the character is seen. There is an accepted level of colors on a gradient that could be argued for the character's armor, but that does not make the CRL wrong. We only make CRLs for, "variants" that are approved, otherwise we'd have a 48 page long CRL for Aphra, alone, with all the Barbie dress up versions she has in the comics.

So the correct statement isn't, "how can we make it not inaccurate?", but, "do I have the references to validate my interpretation for approval, which can then be ADDED to the existing CRL that already has done so?". The answer to that lies with the Detachment Leader, LMO, and your GML on how well you replicate the references to the real world.

Thank you for taking the time to help me understand. I now regret lurking. :)

  4. Hi everyone. I'm a prospective member from Orange, CA and hope to become a member of the Southern California Garrison. Having already personally built a screen-accurate Savage Opress lightsaber, I hope to also create a screen-accurate version of his costume to participate in 501st activities & charity events. Honestly, I've been a lurker for a while because I'm uncertain the screen-accurate version of Savage's costume I plan to create will gain 501st approval. The Savage Opress CRL indicates his chest armor is black. However, I have only ever seen his chest armor as dark brown.  I will continue researching what to do next. In the era of LCD screens, I can see how his chest armor can be mistaken for black, but even the chest armor in Lucasfilm-authorized costumes is dark brown.

I see dark brown on Savage and black on Maul:

    maul-oppress.png

The left image is Lucasfilm-approved "Deluxe" savage costume with brown chest armor. In the image on the right, the stress areas on the breastplate are a light brown on my screens, indicating the armor isn't black, but dark brown.

     savage-opress-starwars-collage.jpg

This image is a screengrab from Clone Wars - his armor is clearly brown. In this shot, unlike so many others, he is recovering from surgery and lit by medical lighting. I hate to be the FNG that says the CRL has inaccuracies, but I'm willing to do the necessary work to get it corrected. I simply need to know the process. :-D
