Alas, no build is every truly finished! Thus, behold, the Sith Acolyte Helmet!
Basically it is my version 5 Sith Acolyte mask supplemented with a detachable backplate. I've worked on this build for 3 years, and in that time have come by a lot of invaluable information and insight into this character; I've known for a while that the mask is actually a two-part helmet, though until now I didn't see the need do the back piece, as it was never seen in the old trailers. The unhooded Acolytes in the new SWTOR trailer "Sacrifice" changed my mind!
In the reference material the Sith Acolyte character's helmet is quite small in proportion to the rest of the body. When I initially modelled the front mask, I scaled it up so that it would cover the face of an average person. I then made the back piece to maintain proportion with the front, which made it very accurate albeit small.
My goal in this was not to make a wearable component, but to turn the wearable mask into a screen accurate display piece - a full helmet. Don't get me wrong, the two-part helmet CAN be worn, though because of how snug it is, it may not fit all heads or be very comfortable to wear for more than a few minutes at a time. The two halves are separated for the helmet to be put on; they secure back in place over the head using Velcro straps. Some people have suggested neodymium magnets to hold the two halves together, and so I placed an order for some to experiment with. I'll be posting results soon.
(WIP photos and notes are being compiled and will be posted on my site as usual).
In other news: the redesigned and much more accurate V2 chest plate is finally ready! The new plate is reinforced with a metal rod across the central bridge (the weakest structural point), and is lighter than the old version. I have some amber LED lights on order as well; once those get here, I'll put together a lit Jedi version to give you an idea of what that will look like.

Introducing Sith Acolyte/TOR Jedi chest plate V2! Unlike the original version which was done 100% by hand, this is completely CAD based, and will be 3D printed. As before, the final piece will be cold cast in 65D resin, with the outer layer cold-cast in aluminum. The Jedi version will come with a 3D printed centre oval housing, which will be comprised of two pieces that will snap together. The assembly will be hollow to allow for installation of LED lights. I will be 3D printing this in the next few days once I finish up the model, so stay tuned for more updates!

See the new SWTOR trailer "Sacrifice"? Just EPIC, and the acolytes make a return! Here are some screen grabs.
Anyway, in light of the new trailer, the Sith Acolyte mask backplate in the works, which will turn my V5 mask into a full helmet as seen in the new trailer. To keep true to accuracy and proportion, the back piece is quite small and snug, so it may not fit all heads. I will not know the fit until I actually start casting. In any case, It will be a great addition to the build and allow for the mask to be displayed as a helmet.

Just returned from Celebration 7 in Anaheim, and I am happy to say the armour was a complete hit! I've never been to a costuming event before, and Celebration was literally my first one, and it was truly an amazing experience! After about 2 hours of walking around on the floor, we tried to leave, but just kept getting assailed by people wanting photos! It was especially great to see the smiles on kids' faces when they posed for a photo. What a fantastic experience!
Here are some photos I compiled from the event. The absolute best part was when out of costume, and carrying my Shae Vizla helmet, I ran into the lead writer for SWTOR at BioWare, who recognized it and me from FaceBook, which led to a VIP invite to the SWTOR Cantina Tour at the Hilton with the senior SWTOR BioWare staff. It was by far the highlight of the entire trip!

After nearly 3 years, my Sith Acolyte build is finally finished! I'll be taking hi rez photos and video in the next few days and sending in my application to the 501st! In the meantime, here is a teaser photo!

Here's the armor finally set up on a mannequin. It's a bit taller and skinnier than I am, but I think the idea is captured quite nicely. The boots, biceps (which I am still making) and robe are still missing from the photo, but I will be putting this on in all its glory within the next few days!

Quick update. Torso fitting and assembly finished!
Build almost done. I'll be finishing it this weekend, just in time to debut it at Celebration in Anaheim!

The pinnacle of Sith Acolyte mask evolution is reached with my latest and final version of this mask! CAD-based, 3D printed, molded and cold cast in aluminum, this is the mask I've been trying to make all these years!

Also, redid the belt canister,
pouches,
as well as the elbows to make them spot on as well.
Pouches are non-functional and made from Task 16 rubber.

Just recently received a kudos from Blur Studio regarding the work I've done on the acolyte!!!
In the photos below, my Sith Acolyte mask at Blur Studios, the birth place of the Sith Acolyte, where it will be put on display! How crazy is that!!! (Photos courtesy of David Wilson, director of the SWTOR trailers at Blur). Few more of my SWTOR pieces are on their way to Blur now as well to be enclosed in glass. What a huge honor!
Anyway, decided to update a few pieces of the armor to make them even more accurate! Stay tuned.

Cod plate made out of rubber. I'm going to weather it a bit to make it blend in more; this is an experimental piece, so I'll keep you posted on how it holds up. But, to keep it true to the reference material, I wanted it to be one piece, made out of a flexible rubbery material. Here's a video.

Here is a pretty big update: for the first time ever, here are all the pieces of my Sith Acolyte armour gathered together for a group photo (forgot one of the boot assemblies, though!). COD plate and right thigh left to go, and we're in business! My supplier dropped the ball on my silicone order recently, which created a delay. But anyways, here are the photos!

o I have finally started to paint and assemble the actual pieces of the armour I'm going to be wearing at C7 in Anaheim. After the shins and calves, I spent the past two days working on the gauntlets.These are cold cast in aluminum, with each gauntlet being comprised of 3 pieces: upper, lower, and missile. I initially, I had these come together with velcro, but in the end I epoxy puttied them solid. They slide onto the arm, and are held in place on with friction from the padding inside.
The paint job was done using 4 types of spray paint: black undercoat that was left to dry for less than 5 minutes, followed by Charcoal Grey by Dupli-Color, and Magnetic gray also by Dupli-Color on the wrist, middle mini hand plate thingy, and the entire lower half. This layer was also let dry for about 2 minutes in front of a heater. After the two said minutes, I went over the surface with steel wool to dull the metal flakes inside the paint, and to at the same time smooth and weather down the paint. I find that using steel wool before the paint is fully cured produces a very gear looking weathering effect; lots of pressure rubs the paint right down to the cold cast metal (polishing this up in the process), while a little bit of pressure rubs off the top grey layer in clumps, revealing the black primer underneath. Finally, I used some Acrylic flat black to paint the seams, and to "dirty up" the overall look.

Shin/Calves finally done! Will have this set up on a mannequin with everything else shortly!

So! The leg masters have now been fully done, and the calves and shins and left thighs have all been molded and cast! I'm waiting on another batch of silicone to arrive any day now so that I can finish up the right thigh.
Here is a sneak peak of one of the legs (these are masters, and not actual casts) set up on my stormtrooper mannequin). The mannequin is actually pretty thin, so disregard the way the actual fit looks.
Here is a photo of the shin and calf casts, untrimmed, and unpolished cold cast in resin. I may actually do these pieces in fiberglass in the end. We will see though!
And here is a sneak peak at the very last piece in my Acolyte build, and that is the COD plate, which when finished, will be cast in flexible rubber.

My wife's Shae Vizla armour has been taking up a lot of my time, since it still needs lots of work to be ready for C7 in Anaheim. However, since I will be going as Sith Acolyte, I'm also working on the SA when I can.
Latest in this build is the thigh armour plates, which are nearing completion. The left master is now done and ready for molding, with the right following closely behind! Here is a quick fit to the Vizla mannequin to give an idea.
Also, shin plates are now modelled, and will be off to the 3D printers in the next few days.
On the reference material, there are two small, horizontal panels that link the front and back of the shin plates. I will be doing these separately, which is why they are not in the CAD model above.

Haven't posted in a while, but this month was crazy busy and exciting for me at the same time!
BioWare invited me to New York City to be a guest judge at a cosplay contest they hosted during the Comic Con week at the Hard Rock cafe, for their Knights of the Fallen Empire pre-launch Cantina event. It was a tremendous honour and a ton of fun! Here's a photo of my judge tag I brought back with me as a souvenir.
I brought a Sith Acolyte helmet to gift to the BioWare team as a thank you for giving me such an amazing opportunity. You can see the helmet on the table in front of www.ladyinsanity.com's Ashe Soriano and I as we chatted about the contest, prop-making, and other things live on Twitch during the event.
Also attended a local con, and here are some photos that were taken of me in my kit today at the C4 Central Canada Comic Con in Winnipeg. This is Version 2 of my Sith Armor, which features a V2 chest plate, and a full SIth Acolyte helmet. Since the Acolytes are seen without a hood in the latest Blur cinematic "Sacrifice" for Knights of the Fallen Empire, and since I made an accurate back piece for the helmet, I can now run around without having the hood up. This really cuts down on heat retention, which is a blessing! Also, the two halves of the helmet join up with neodymium magnets, which makes taking the mask off for quick cool downs really handy!
