  1. Depending on how you did it, I bet you could make a mold even after 3d printing it and somehow get it to a metal. I have a guy locally whose policy is "Don't suggest the impossible, unless you can afford to pay for the product." We had foam thermal detonators in our goody bags at the banquet, fully painted and durable.
  2. Hah, my mistake then, I'll just shut up and point to the picture next time.
  3. Awesome stuff so far, keep it up. Nice present to come back from a vacation and see a good-looking build thread. Stick with it!
  4. I wish. Some written description is nice, but particularly for video games and comics ect. it gets hard, even still it's hard for folks like BARC Troopers, anything CGI is subject to some debate because of screen colors and it not being a physical item we can imitate. Harsh stuff.
  5. I'm nitpicky because I care. Most garrisons I would hope are just like the above described. Worst case, the Revan boards here are pretty dang active and Flagship is fortunate enough to have some downright amazingly talented folks.
  6. While I like the detail of the third one, I agree that the second one is likely going to be considered more accurate. It would then be a matter of a little bit of work to make it look accurate, ensure there is a shadow in the center (stain/wash/weather). I am definitely in favor more accurate material. Always comes back to making it look like the source though.
  7. "Sorta mostly yeah". I'm by no means the final decision on something and I won't pretend to be the best darndest person out there. But I try to stay as involved as possible and provide sound insight into the approval process. Your second part is pretty right. I'll get you in the ballpark but there's no promises made. Your last paragraph is exactly why I'm trying to stay on top of this and use words of encouragement. I think your intent and desire is absolutely in the right place, and I want to encourage you to put out the best possible product you can for all to see. You submitting something a-typical is going to be a success either way, as we reaffirm what we already have, or we take a second look at what we've got and decide there's a better option. My suggestion I suppose is to be creatively uncreative. We're replicating not inventing. I think that makes sense. Also, it's tough, but I do my best to relay the difference between personal opinion and that as a Costume Mentor. I'm in Hawaii this next week but I'll check in from time to time. Also, I haven't posted it yet but I oughta have it in my sig or something: http://mercs.firespray.net/forum/index. ... ic=59274.0
  8. Yup, NP. Short version of real situation: A familiar GML will review it anyway before sending it up. Then they post on the Legion thread in a private thread only view-able by GMLs, GWLs, Detachment Leads and certain other staff to include the LMOs. If anyone has any comments they're made there confidentially in regards to suggestions. Sometimes things come up and myself or others will give input for consideration. I make a point to keep an eye on the Revans that come through, to either make suggestion or take note of what gets noticed or suggested.
  9. Normally. All TFE costumes are approved at the Legion level by the LMO, not by the Garrison.
  10. We'll take it in stride and deal with it when presented with new evidence. I'm curious at the very least.
  11. Exactly. Ultimately the question should be whether or not it looks as close as possible to the source material, in this case we have that. The words in the description of the CRL are to help, but when it comes to color, side-by-side comparison is important.
  12. I don't know that metal is required to achieve the look. Perhaps, but a silver coloring might also achieve the same look. Again looking for a mock-up here and I do like what you have so far, very interesting. As it is, there's still no guarantee it'll get 501st approval, but I really do think this is a neat project worth looking at.
  13. I can explain it. They didn't have to actually build it! Jokes aside, I am very interested on your take of this, and here is what I encourage you to do: Make a mock-up, possibly using the actual materials you plan to for best results, and create the section in a sampling. If you do this, snap some awesome photos and share, you can bring some better light to this. I think that falls in line with making a critique and also being able to provide a solution (as a better way to problem solving). Frankly, if you do it and do it well, I would consider doing it on my own rig, and a few others likely would as well as we try to improve the costume. But before we go discussing it further, I would suggest giving us a visual sample of your plan. Sketches would be good, a real sample best I think.
  14. Hot glue is probably fine till spring, I did fall-winter for most and have spent most of the summer being glad I had my officer as a backup. Edit: Also be sure you get the velcro in the hood low enough. I had to sew my own new one in and I cut the old one out so handlers wouldn't grab the wrong one. I've seen a lot of folks (even some of my own old photos) wear the hood too far back and not low enough on the mask. Make sure you fit it right and if you want the velcro at the top of the mask (so it's mostly out of sight when not on) you'll want to make sure you adjust the velcro correctly.
  15. I'm having a hard time actually following what you're suggesting. But I would like to understand. With regards to the picture shown above of an actual comment, I believe I posted that the black piece would look a lot more accurate if it were thicker. The image on the CRL is of my build before I added some length and used more accurate rings, you'll notice the inner strap is thicker. Are you suggesting we try a different approach to portraying it accurately? Edit: Re reading this but I'll leave my above text. I believe this is the result of a common issue with the costume. The game is made in a build that doesn't use heavy lighting and has gradient textures to create false shadows. While I believe a costume done well with a black fabric behind it probably would be fine to approve. Our method of approval thus far has been rings with no backing behind. Similar issues have come up in discussions of black vs. silver vs. gray for areas of the boots, armor pieces ect. which I see you mentioned.
  16. Agreed. They're a WIP, and certainly better than not having anything at all. I'm thankful for the time that was put into them previously. But they do need some TLC.
  17. This... 100% correct. We'll look at it seriously though. May warrant another playthrough with fraps. Particularly with the new iOS version.
  18. I've logged 30+ troops and had no problems with the velcro. Some of the hot glue has been a major problem. Redo with epoxy. I used a heat gun and molded the chest to better fit me, you'll be fine but wear a thick shirt to be safe, it'll be flippin toasty. Check out DarthBrute's post about his WIP for better ideas on some of the other tweaks to do, in particular the rings and capelet. Otherwise you're on point. I suggest sewing in velcro for the red sash, and a few other spots. Hand loop stitches worked just fine. As for the big o ring, if you find a nice replacement cool, but I wouldn't sweat that one much. For the little rings, drapery rings.
  19. I would like to warn against the difference in material there based on this image: However, that is a player model and not the NPC. No images above the ankle exist but as a matter of reality, no one will likely see above your ankle anyway (scandalous!). The reality is that I think the boots would be fine, so long as no one ever sees above your ankle.
  20. It is a hard sell to try and require or make a standard based on rumor or supposition though. I've mentioned to Thomas the idea of making some time for CRL discussion. We'll certainly give it a serious look.
  21. I have no problems uploading them and posting on your behalf if you like. I personally use Imgur.com. Make a profile, then click images at the top right and essentially you can drag and drop files onto your screen. There's a button when you click on your image to select where you'd like to share, one is BBCode and it'll put that into your clipboard so you can paste here. Super simple but depending on your level of understanding and my sometimes sketchy use of grammar, that may be too much. If you want help, lemme know.
  22. I'm using rattle cans on my custom mandalorian and it's working well for me, even though I have an airbrush. If you are up to it, do you feel like posting pictures? WIP on a custom build would be enjoyable/enlightening for all I suspect. If you feel like sharing.
  23. I'd say there is a Flagship Eclipse pin and/or patch in it for you if you're up to the task.
