Starkiller Sith Robe WIP & some questions

Darth Halcyon

Recommended Posts

Hi!

A couple of days ago I started on my Starkiller project. I'm nearly done with all the sewing stuff and would like to have some opinions on what I've done so far, because at the moment it is easier to change things than when all the work is done.

It would be great if you could give me some opinions. I already think that I have to change one or two things, but first of all would like to hear what you think.

I'm absolutely not happy with how the neck armor is pushed upwards by the cloak, so if anyone had an idea on how I could change that, it would be awesome.

And don't worry about the double sash. I still have to buy the paint for the patterns on it and it is not yet attached to the other costume parts. Just wanted to have it in to give the costume a more finished look.

Also I have some questions on some of the details of the outfit and I would be glad if anyone could answer them.

1. Is there a rule on how the patterns on the double sash must look like? Or is it just important that the stuff seen is most similar to the reference pictures as possible?

2. I saw in the reference pictures, that Starkiller has a Darth Vader lightsaber. Should it be the Vader lightsaber or can it also be the Starkiller lightsaber?

3. And then I realized that on one picture he has that sort of holster for the lightsaber. Is that necessary? As in the standards it mentions only the covertec clip I guess that should be enough?

Thanks

Darth Halcyon

looks like a solid start. Only problem I can see off hand is the straps holding down the shoulder armor have to be a dark maroon. Chest armor may be a bit tall, but we'll have to see how the cape lays over it.

Hi!

First of all thanks for your reply and sorry, that I'm writing so late. Had been very busy these days and then had been abroad for a couple of days.

Thanks for mentioning the straps. Actually they are dark maroon. I hadn't realised, that they turned out that "black" in the photos. Now that I know, I will lighten them a bit with a leather spray, so that they cannot be taken for being black anymore. Good point. Thanks :)

I'm not quite sure with the chest armor. Had it done smaller first, but when I put the cloak on the shouler padding could be seen between the armor parts and the cloak. As this isn't the case on the reference pics I thought it would be best to "stretch" it a bit, so that the padding is covered.

I'll try to get the cloak closed as soon es possible so that I can take another picture to see how it worked. Well otherwise I'll do it again. Luckily I have some spare material I can use that isn't to expensive :)

I'm not really seeing a question there, but I'll take a stab at what you're hoping for thoughts on -

I'm not quite sure with the chest armor. Had it done smaller first, but when I put the cloak on the shouler padding could be seen between the armor parts and the cloak. As this isn't the case on the reference pics I thought it would be best to "stretch" it a bit, so that the padding is covered.

I think it more has to do with your cape, it's sitting a bit high and close to your neck. it actually meets closer to the bottom tip of your collar armor and extends out at a rough 140 degree angle. I used an eye hook to hold mine down, I'd recommend that or velcro.

Beyond that I'm not sure what your question is. Could you elaborate?

Hi!

Thanks for sharing the idea of using an eye hook. That's a great idea, will try on that one. My cloak can't be closed right now. It was just improvised for the photos. I will post another picture, when I have solved that problem...and the one with the neck armor standing away from my neck ^^

The questions I was referring to were the 3 ones from the first post. I have quite a hard time, finding answers to them. Maybe those things aren't as important in fact as I think and maybe don't matter for 501st approval (? - I don't know :-s) , but I'm always about the details.

Thank you :)

OH! now I feel oblivious :P

1. if by double sash you mean the 2 grey tabards hanging from the belt, no there is no set rule yet. there are 4 downward sweeping wings on each one and a light grey border line about 1/2"-1" away from the edge. Just make it look right. I cut out one good pattern and then cut out the 8 wings in one go.

2. Since it was a promo version of starkiller, they hadn't created his signature open hilted saber yet and I would guess that Vader's was thrown in there as a stand in. I'm sure it wouldn't matter unless someone wanted to be very picky. And should that happen, just don't wear it in your submission photos - last thing I heard was we can't require someone to have a weapon anyway.

3. Don't worry about the sling as there's only one early photo that even looks like there's a sling there. Personally I wouldn't worry about the covertech clip either unless you REALLY need somewhere to hang your saber. There was never a clear enough photo to prove what was holding it on, beyond his skill with the Force.

hope that helps!

ok, this is only from a sewing/tailoring point of view, you see in your side on pic the top bib that your chest armor is attached to how it folds a little bit? I'd like to see that conform more to your body, in the reference pics that part appears to follow the body form and not float above the shoulder and then the lower corners of the fabric of the chest armor bib should follow your body line and not stick out as much as they are on you, what you might try is a rare earth magnets on the underside to keep it from popping out, they are cheap and easy to attach. also in you middle section in the front on pic you have a lot of extra fabric there that folds up oddly, is there any way for you to tailor that in some so it's not so foldy? or possibly take some of the length out and hide a seam under your belt? I think that might solve that problem. What did you use to make the plates? metal, sintra, ect? I noticed that the armor has a large gap between the plate and the bib. Depending on what material you used to make your plates you can either bend them more so they more conform to your body or use magnets between the plate and the bib.

I hope that this helps you to tweak you costume to be the very best that it can be.

I really like your lower robes and how they open around your legs perfectly and the red color you choose for the inside of the cloak. I think if you're able to address some of the little issues you'll be much happier with your finished product

Good luck with the rest of the build,

Aysel

Hi!

Thanks for your replies and your feedback. That helped a lot and got me on some things I didn't even realize before. Thank you :)

I will start working on a lightsaber as soon as possible, too. I know it is not necessary, but somehow I want the outfit to be "complete" :D I will also get some color for the grey tabards and start on the pattern :)

It took me a while to write on here again, as I wanted to have one of your suggestions applied to my outfit. Well, I tried and it would be great to get some opinion.

I tried to make some changes to the chest plates and got this one. Of course it is not yet sticky to the padding, thats why I have my fingers on it  I tried to make it follow the line of my chest a bit more. Only one side done and not yet painted, but, well, see for yourself. Pictures not to great, did them in front of a mirror

that's a much better shape than the old ones! I think if you just make sure that the padded/bib part conforms to you body plus the new plate shape then you'll be golden. At least in that little respect to the costume

Hi there!

My costume is near to being complete, will post some more WIP pictures soon.

But I have one "huge" problem to solve and have no idea on how to work that one out :( I bought those boots on ebay, which are already really wide for boots you buy in Germany. Really wide means, that they were about 4 cm too tight for me. I do much sports, thats why my calves are very packed with muscles. Though I bought the boots cause someone assured me that it would be no problem to widen them to my size as they are completly made of leather and not leatherette with some rubber parts.

Now I had them widened but they are still to tight as the guy only widened them for about 3 cm. Now he says that he must insert more material, but can't widen them any more... As it is only 0,5 to 1 cm that is still missing I don't want to have any material inserted, probably this work will cost a lot. The boots themselves costed about 35 euros and to have them widend another 15 euros. Don't want to pay another 20 or 30 euros for only 0,5 or 1 cm more :(

Do you have any hints on how I could solve the problem? I know I won't get any other boots over here in Germany that are wider, as the ones I have are already "extremely" wide.

However, I will be in the UK next weekend and wanted to know wether it is easier to get boots there that are wide enough, as someone told my in the UK the shoestores are "specialised" on bigger sizes. Maybe also on wider ones? Don't know. Anyone having experiences?

Thanks

halcyon

Yikes, that sounds like a problem. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't know where to begin to help you with boots - mine were store bought and I didn't have to have someone modify them. Best of luck, maybe someone else can help you...

Okay, solved the problem the expensive way :(

Bought another pair of boots - also online, as it is impossible to buy such big boots in a store somewhere close to my hometown. They are according to the seller even 3 or 4 centimeteres more than I would need, so enough space. As soon as I have those and checked that they fit perfectly I will sell the other pair plus one pair of other boots which I took as an alternative for another costume. Will wear the "Starkiller" boots for both of the outfits than and probably make up the costs of the new boots... We'll see ^^

In between I made some pictures of the progresses I made on my costume. However, don't have my Chest and Throat Armor on, as I need to re-paint them. Also the cloak is missing as I change it a bit and it hasnt yet a velcro for closing it. Further pics coming soon

I like it so far. you even have your belt worn at an angle the way it should be (though I'm not entirely sure that was intentional). Is there a seam at the top of the yoke vest that you could angle off to better conform to your shoulders? it won't really matter once the cape is on, but it might help things lie flatter in the long run.

I see one thing that's bugging me, but it's accurate to the CRL so I need to check with pam before I mention it. I'll get back to you on that. But besides that I love how your costume is coming together!

I talked with Pam and we've agreed that the color of your shoulder armor straps is okay -

"There are three distinct colors in the references. One looks brown, one looks reddish brown, and one is red/burgundy."

which was my main complaint, but we also agreed that the sheen coming off of them needs to be fixed. I'd recommend a similarly colored acrylic paint if you don't want to remake them - it'll tone down the shine and potentially give it a leather grain.

Sorry for not writing for such a long time, but I was quite busy with studies and - of course - with my Starkiller project.

I took the shine off of the leather straps on the shoulder bells and I was trying hard to change how the should padding sticks to the flak vest, but that's something I can't really change. As you mentioned it doesn't really matter when I wear the cloak ;)

After all that's what I've done over the last few weeks / months. Lightsaber is still work in progress but I hope I can finish it soon. Having problems with the soundboard at the moment :(

Your cape or your skirt, whichever one you're stepping on, needs to be shortened

your cape needs to meet in the middle a little lower on your chest (near the point of the collar armor). I did this personally with velcro but you could use a button, eye hook, etc.

You're obi looks a little flat where in ref pics it looks a little more bunched up, but that one may be up for debate.

That's all I see right now, other than that looks pretty good!

Thanks for your comments. I shortened the cloak so I don't step on it any longer. Also pulled it further to the chest. Thanks for mentioning that. Looks much better now :)

Lightsaber is nearly done, but unfortunately at the moment without any electronics. Hope that I can change that soon...
