This is more of a generalized tip, but when all I needed was scrap leather for smaller pieces (in my case, for leather scale armor), I did a search on eBay and discovered that buying the leather as scrap was MUCH cheaper than purchasing, say, half a hide or some such. So, if you need smaller pieces of leather, that's a viable option.

Also, don't forget that if you're in the US and have PowWows (traditional Native American dancing for those who don't know) close by, there's always leather sellers there (mostly soft deer).
