Creating Visas

Hi there all :)

I wanted to show you the progress I've made on my current costume project - a Visas :)

Some of you might recognise this from over at the RL forum, but I thought I should (finally) show it here as well ;)

I've had a lot of (invaluable) help from my dear friend Lora Skywalker on this project - thank you :D

First we made a trial version of the head piece from some cheap, leftover fabric, since I didn't want to use the more expensive actual fabric.

Then we moved on to the actual fabric:

It's only held together by needles at this point

After that we started working on the black dress.

It will consist of an upper part made from a shirt pattern which will then be connected to a high-waist skirt - and the seam will be hidden beneath the sash/obi.

Some time passed before I was able to go to Lora's place again, but I finally got there for a weekend.

On the saturday we went to town in search of elastic band and velcro. I ended up coming home with completely new red fabric for the costume, which means I will be doing two versions of it now.

We started out by discovering that the neck we had planned to do wouldn't work out so we cut off some fabric in order to change it:

(in a lot of the pics, everything is held together by needles...)

after we cut it:

After that we started working on the black sleeves, which turned out to be a pain and much, much more time and work consuming than we had anticipated. Take our advice and never do the sleeves like this, unless you really know what you're doing!

This was the shape we ended up using, to make the sleeve 'lift' correctly:

Sleeves done!

Then we moved on to the new neckline:

We needed to put a zipper in the side, so I can get it on and off:

VisasMarr_67.jpg

(those things are not entirely fun to sew on!)

We made a dress which was then sewed onto the top part:

And then:

I got a cheap black t-shirt and took off the sleeves (well, have only done one so far...) and used the sleeve for model.

Then I cut the red fabric and sewed it on:

Then I tried it with the glove which I have begun to do the gold trimming on:

(the glove still needs some paint and the gray ribbons)

And this would be what it looks like now:

(the sash is not done, it's just the rest of the red fabric wrapped around, which is why it sits a little weird ;) )

Sorry to double post, but I've been trooping in my new costume (which has just been approved by Rebel Legion :D )

Went to the Scandinavian Sci-Fi, Film and Games Con, in Malmö, Sweden with the Rebel Legion's Nordic Outpost and the Nordic Garrison of 501st.

With two sabers:

We switched weapons:

Thank you :D

I've begun working on the second version of this costume.

This time it will be the Concept art/comics-version and in much more accurate colored red fabric :)

The new red fabric:

Dragtroderi_02.jpg

This time the sash will be a different shade of red than the rest.

We started out by completely redesigning the headpiece (mock-up version first of course ;) ):

Testing 'shiny-ness' (we had a lengthly discussion about shiny-ness going on :P )

Cutting out the headpiece:

Almost there:

The sleeves:

Skirt, headpiece and one sleeve done:

(I know it looks extremely purple in this pic, but it really isn't)

Now I just need to finish the other sleeve, do the gold trim (now that going to be a pain in you-know-where) and find a way of keeping the headpiece sitting right. :)

LOL! I must admit, shiny fabric is one of my pet-peeves in Star Wars costuming. I want to make a great big poster that says, "Shiny fabric is for prom dresses and bridesmaids! Sith Lords do not go to prom... they prefer to spend their time plotting ways to destroy and/or rule the galaxy!"

(And yes, painting the gold on the sleeves is a long and tedious project... but it sure looks great when you're done!)

Pam :-)

indeed...shiny fabrics are a bit too Las vegas for me lol

Matt always looks far more expensive and flows better. the only sheen i think is acceptable is in silk.
