HI! I'm nicole and I'm just starting to get together a ventress concept costume. I've never done this before and I've no friends into this sort of thing so any advice and help would be most appreciated!

I'm in the process of getting my thoughts together to go on a fabric hunt! I'm so excited to get this going!!!

I'm really wondering where I should/can buy a bald cap and the face paint at. Any suggestions and best products to use?

Hello!!

I'm also working on a Ventress cosplay right now, so let's exchange tips and advice!! =D I've just started just like you, I've never done it before.

For the bald caps, I've read in many places than Graftobian is a good one. You can either buy a cap alone, or a full kit with everything to put it on (spirit gum, liquid latex, etc.). However several people here have recommended Pros-Aide rather than spirit gum to fix the cap, so i've bought some (with the pros-Aide remover).

Also, since the bald cap are one-use only, you may want to buy many, and in that case I've found this case which seems more interesting financially: http://charlie-short.com/shop_caps.html. I think I will buy this pack of 8 caps, rather than 8 Graftobian caps separately. The guy who makes them also wears them all the time for cosplay, he makes tutorials on youtube, and really his caps look nice :) I'll try them and I'll tell you what I think about them!

For the face paint I'm not decided yet. If you have ideas, I'm all ears!! ^^

So far I've tried Ben Nye Magicolor liquid paint (for another cosplay). It was ok! I don't know if it's the best though, and I'm not sure how to put it on the latex bald cap (should I mix it with liquid latex?)

thanks! yes let's do be I know nothing about bald caps or face paint :)

what were you going to make the shirt piece out of? I was thinking of buying a long sleeve athletic shirt and adding the panels to the sides....

I'm doing Clone Wars Ventress myself so it's not the same outfit.

I was thinking of buying lycra. Then I'll destroy a turtleneck shirt I have, and use it as a model to make the top with the lycra. I'll see if it works (I've never sewed before except for rectangular capes haha). If I have too much difficulties with that, I'll take a long sleeve turtleneck (since I can't find a short sleeve one), and I'll cut the sleeves, and cut an opening in the front and in the back.

For you, using a shirt and adding panels to the sides looks like a good option to me! Don't hesitate to look at the other threads of this forum, other people have done the same costume :)

yeah. there's some good threads for sure!!! they're gonna be life savers when I get into the nitty gritty.

I'm gonna have to destroy a turtleneck as well to make a pattern for my neck cowl. and I'm nervous as well since I have only sewn rectangles as well

so here's the original concept art, the 501st approved costume, and my doodle for the proposed change is like to make to my costume to make it more like the concept art. I want to change the belt harness to cloth harness that's part of the skirt like in the concept art. hopefully going to the store to start picking out fabrics and prop stuffs in the next few days! so EXCITED!

From available reference I'd go the other way, with long sleeved shirt and adding the armoured part up the middle in front and back.

by request here's the information on the image I chose. the image was created by the artist Dermot Power when he worked on attack of the clones as a concept designer. it was the initial concepts that ultimately led to count dooku but when they were coming up with concepts for clone wars, they liked the concept so well, they used this as the starting point for ventress. so it's official Star Wars art but there's no other images that match this costume specifically unfortunately.

Any input on my proposed change would be great since I'm going with a different concept idea than previously tried.

Thanks so much!

I decided to put a slit up the front since the image looks like it's supposed to be almost samurai in nature to give it that affect. ps:I really suck at this forum thing so I apologize for all the awkward link posts

For sharing images click the picture icon between the chain (for links) and Strike-through S. Paste in the address in that dialog and then preview/post.

There are many images/sources for this version of Ventress from the concept art, to the Sideshow Premium Format figure with a multitude of comic reference from Dark Horse to draw from.

The detail you posted about with the belt is used in many of the varieties of this Asajj. It is a leather piece. Note in the concept sketch that the side and front view don't match, they are just early preliminary explorations.

LadyB will have some suggestion. Be sure and have a good look at the sideshow and Dark Horse images though.

The side view of the concept art is much like her "Obi" version found when she dueled Anakin and gave him his scar.

There were many other sketches that lead to her armoured costume, Luminara and Barris, some nightsister and other characters from the Episode 2 concepts.

Unfortunately it can be a little difficult to cipher between official reference and fan art as she has been a very popular subject for fan art. The above are all official comics etc.

Hello nicseb and welcome! It's great to see some new Ventress builders making their costumes :)

I wanted to check and see if it is your intention to have your costume approved for 501st membership? If so, make sure you thoroughly review the stardards required for AOTC Concept Ventress as you build your costume. There are some specific details in the skirt for example that you will need to have for successful approval, and I'm not sure I'm seeing them in the pic of your skirt

For the shirt, the best advice I can give is to use a fabric that matches in colour to the standard and is stretchy, since the shirt must be form fitting. You can either make the shirt from scratch or use a purchased one and modify it, whatever is easiest for you.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi. On the belt, it should not be constructed of fabric, it should be leather or leather-like. The skirt can be layered and curved as inspired by the sketch, but he belt parts should be leather. For the sketches, don’t limit yourself to that as the only reference. As Michael said there are many other sources that paint a fuller picture of this particular costume. The "belt" underneath and other details are just in the one view of the concept sketch, not in the side. I myself drew from them for reference, but they weren't my only sources. There is no problem with using a different variety of the belt than the one I started with; there are three different versions I've seen in official sources. I'm working on a version similar to what you pointed out that you like, with the wider underbelts similar to the Sideshow figure.

I'd be happy to share the pattern for the belt I'm working on. It is constructed of one section of leather that wraps around the waist, crosses through
a silver buckle then hangs down, loops around and attaches in the back. I’ll see if I can share images soon.

Concerning your proposed skirt: I like the fabric. It could work well. My concerns are that it ought to be either pleated or gathered to match the reference and should flow nicely (more wraith-like and less fitted). I agree that it should definitely be floor or almost floor length, like a samurai, to hide the footwork. More rather than less fabric would be ideal. I’ve made dresses for about all version of this one for me and several others, I’d be happy to share ideas.

Based on what you want to do the Obi version of the Concept Asajj might be best. You can have the layered skirt and the singular belt. That works and is a striking set-up.

thank you everyone for your comments! they are most appreciated!!!! I think I will be doing at least 2 different belts in the end.

and yes I am indeed looking for 501st membership :)

for the skirt, I made it 1 to 2 sizes too big so I could use an elastic band and have lots of natural pleating and for more volume in the skirt. I fugured that the top would always be covered with a belt of sorts so that wouldn't matter. I'll have to reevaluate the skirt with the different images everyone has suggested however.

I am planning on getting an athletic shirt in a light grey and modifying the sides to fit my needs. does anyone know enough about different paints and markers to know if a fabric paint or fabric marker would work on that type of material? ie: under armour/dri fit material. I'd like to try that for the lines instead of a striped fabric or added panel.

so upon review I will be doing the obi belt version for approval and official troops. and I'll be making the draped belt pieces for my own amusement :)

I do want to make sure I have the obi belt version correct though. the obi is covered by a straight belt piece without the 2 draped pieces correct? just making sure that's the correct way I see it.
