  1. I came back to state I would endorse your approval with this costume with little to no changes. For CRL use, I would want to review your suit together with the approved members against reference material. Be well
  2. Good evening, I am seeking to have the Costume Reference Library requirement removed from costume approvals. That said we have been discussing your suit. Our staff and I feel you hit all the details, but colour stands out as strange. I think this can be remedied with reference. Dawn is looking into assisting with that as we speak. But sharing your own reference would be useful. Here are a few approved (without CRL’s Starkiller: Dessert disguise) Legion Costumes for your own review; I suggested the CRL in 2006 and made the first entries in 2007, it was never meant to be used to hinder approvals. While seeking to remove the recent CRL requirement, I want to make it clear we welcome voluntary participation. Currently it is mandatory. Be well
  3. A question was raised on to which Detachment a certain character should go once they were approved in the Legion. I would like to share my stance on the topic with The Flagship Eclipse 1. Placement of a new to the Legion Character should be decided by Detachment. 2. More than one Detachment can offer a home for same character. But for the Legion’s sake, I recommend one official home; 3. When in doubt, while an LMO is a swell place to turn to for guidance, but do not forget to ask the first approved costumer themselves. It would be in deep error to assign a character to a detachment before a costumer has been approved. I argue strongly that the first costumer should have the right to declare the home of their costume--within the constraints of Legion Detachment system. That said, we know Disney has commissioned this character (The Seven Sister.) From past discussion the Legion approved Grand Inquisitor is a welcomed character in The Flagship Eclipse. I thought I just read SLD preferred the Pau’an to be in TFE. (The Flagshp Eclipse, please do not use FSE.) ∴ I would imagine an approved Seventh Sister would find their way (she or he costumed as a the female character) in The Flagship Eclipse. If that was their choice.
  4. Also note, that a CRL is not a requirement for a new costume’s approval. Having a Costume Reference Library entry does green light a costume’s path, but it is not required for a costume’s approval for 501st membership.
  5. Good morning, Lightsabres are not a requirement. We do avoid hilts that obviously belong to other characters (Like Darth Vader) for canon portraits. The first and an only assured canon event all 501st Legion members participate in is their Legion Portrait, which appears in your Legion profile. For this the Legion and this Detachment asks to use either a custom sabre in the ball park of the canon EU sabre or a replica of the canon sabre. If the choice is between Darth Vader’s hilt and no sabre at all, it is preferred that no sabre be used for the portrait. Failing that the correct sabre hilt can be digitally manipulated into the Legion Portrait. Be well, Thomas
  6. Heal well, In the meanwhile, you may find inspiration in this; made by Arthammer LARP Workshop
  7. Good evening, Your costume’s body seems to be based on Manny Llamas’s interpretation of Darth Sion from The Force Unleashed; Here is the definitive render of KOTOR II Darth Sion. And here are the texture maps used to skin the model’s details; From here we can start to make out greater detail of what the KOTOR character involves. KOTOR DS Clothes 1. Pants. Not straight legged but harem style flowing. Try looking up sarouel. 2. Boots. Black high calf Jack boots with seven straps and silver hardware. Straps should look substantial. I recommend getting a few lengths of belt material, possibly from Tandy Leather. 3. Tara. Kendo term. Similar to tasset in Western armour. In both models this is heavily embossed leather, with black islands on a blood red field. 4. Sash. Not a Darth Maul belt, but a leather like sash, taking on the shape of a weight lifter’s belt. 5. Left gauntlet. Black leather, fitted to mid forearm 6. Right arm. Black leather, fitted to top of bicep not unlike an opera glove. Has eight straps with silver hardware. (Download full image for detail) Straps should look substantial. I recommend getting a few lengths of belt material, possibly from Tandy Leather. KOTOR DS Muscle suit 1. Starting with an anatomically accurate base, a defined network of cracks in the flesh define this character. Darth Sion is literally held together by his mastery of hate. (Darth Sion Lord of Pain) Prominent spinal details suggest alternate solution to zipper down the back. Done right, this would likely first require a sculpture, then a mold and experimentation with material casting. One of the reasons not many have attempted this character. As an example of the kind of body suit built I suggest try this posting on the Replica Props Forum; http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=149289 2. Face. Again KOTOR DS has deep cracks in his face like broken chinaware. Start with anatomically correct bald head, then match the reference scarring. CFX makes silicone masks. They even do custom orders. It is not cheap. (Silicone is why Darth Maul and The Emperor masks are approved for the 501st.) Check out their catalogue for inspiration here; http://compositeeffects.com/mystore/index.php?route=common/home These are my recommendations. Thankfully, I do not approve costumes for the 501st anymore. You may find different approaches. This represents my best pitch for bringing the character to Life. Be well, Thomas
  8. Good evening, Recently an increased number of Expanded Universe armoured costume submissions have been tendered using materials that cannot hope to match the reference images. The hard armour recreation above is an example of a completed costume that would be accepted for 501st membership. The cloth costume is an approximation of the reference. From a good distance the colours and shapes are roughly correct, but it would not pass close inspection by the measuring stick of “Looks like it walked off of the big screen.” Now some folk will argue that since many Expanded Universe characters do not have an “official” real world costume reference that the construction technique an material is open to interpretation. And to an extent, they do have a point. However, for 501st approval, there will be certain expectations that do reign in the appearance and materials used. In this instance, from reference and citing similar instances in canon film characters, we The Flagship Eclipse, define Darth Revan’s armour as metal. A hard, glossy material in a form with complexed multidirectional curves that are not easily achieved by simply bending rigid sheet into simple curves. As such cloth and leather constructions are not likely to be approved for membership. Neither would untreated EVA foam. (You might have some success coating a foam construction with a rigid material like wood glue, letting it dry and sanding, but other materials might possibly yield better results.) I have seen all metal constructions for this armour. The two instances were not approved because they did not match the complex multidirectional curves of the reference armour. It could be done in metal. but would require coal forging, an English Wheel, or some such labour intensive and highly skilled art. And it would be beautiful. Recommended in this and other similar constructions would be materials that might require sculpture over a human form as a starting place. From here molds can be made, and armour can be cast in fibreglass, resins, or made into a buck for vacuum forming. This is another labour intensive method requiring a high skill set. Because of the effort involved many craftsmen seek to recoup their investment by offering kits. Others throw together kits with profit being their primary concern. Such kits are discerned by poor fit/poor engineering and lax attention to detail. Please consider the building block of The 501st Legion: The Stormtrooper We have a well established benchmark for what shiny armour should look like. TK’s have a bit of an advantage with near 40 years of fans perfecting builds and offering kits. And the 501st allows for a little interpretation with new units, such as those drafted in the Expanded Universe. Still we want our suits to measure favourably with the costume that founded our community. Thus, if the costume you are making for 501st Legion approval involves shiny armour, the material and technique chosen as well as skill level should be appropriate for recreating (not approximating) a 501st Legion Stormtrooper. Expanded Universe costuming in the 501st Legion is a challenge. And that challenge does not end at approval. But for those who love our characters from beyond the Big Screen, it is entirely worth the effort. Be well, Thomas
  9. I am Falleen confident that you will meet Rebel Legion costume standard. Bravo.
  10. The purpose of this Detachment is to encourage Expanded Universe costuming, and where applicable, guide interested individuals toward reference and review that might result in an approved 501st costume. For The Force Unleashed Darth Sion player skin, let us consider full reference images. One has to be careful when researching this model, there are fan-made mods of this skin for pc versions of KOTOR that do not precisely reflect the character as created for The Force Unleashed. Also, there are The Olde Republic Darth Sion tribute armour offerings which are not currently considered for 501st membership. This has been the best image I have found of the full model, built by our good friend Manny Lamas Manny is very approachable. Periodically he responds to posting on The Force Unleashed costuming group on FB and may be able to provide you with additional details on his model. From what I see, the boots used here continue to use the horizontal strapping of the KOTOR Darth Sion. Please share any further reference images (and their origin) here. Be well and good costuming to you.
  11. Good evening, The Darth Sion you are referencing is a spare game skin from The Force Unleashed. The model itself is not used in any other meaningful way in that game’s story. Perhaps it is too late to persuade you, but I would like introduce forum readers to the Darth Sion of the Knights of the Olde Republic, the Sith Lord who cut off Darth Traya’s left hand and haunted the Jedi Exile’s movements in that saga; My point is, Darth Sion was introduced in Knights of The Olde Republic as above. His character was given life, and SW fans came to know him through his words and actions in KOTOR. I would recommend this appearance over the player skin mod from KOTOR, but I that is only my preference.
  12. As a character, the fallen Sora Bulq would be an approvable character. Full reference will be needed. Some reference can be argued or otherwise inferred. For reference, I recommend to turn off your computer and go to the comic shoppe. If you are going to aim for 501st inclusion as a Dark Side user, I recommend recreating the brown and black outfit from Star Wars Republic 75. Be sure to match the treatment of his hands to the mask.
  13. First I want to congratulate you in your effort of taking on this project. You have meticulously created all of the details. There will be some revision needed to make the suit fit and look natural/authentic. First, I would like you to consider the salt to your pepper in costume form; This is a kit with an amazing level of attention to detail, further brought to life by the costumer’s own efforts. I compliment your Sith Trooper scratch build for a similar level of detail. Notice the construction technique of the Hazard trooper. It is vacuumed formed over sculpted bucks. This allows for easily recreating complex curves that bending flat materials makes difficult to achieve. Look at the thighs on the Sith Trooper again; Not only do they shrink as they go down, but there is also a light curve. Similar to the most prevalent armour example in the Legion: Rather then rebuild the whole trooper, I would concentrate on perfecting the form of the helmet, shoulder bells and torso. I hope to encourage you. You have taken on difficult creation and I think you have the drive to make an excellent costume. Please post images of your progress work to this thread for future discussion. Welcome aboard, Thomas
  14. Good evening, I have shared your post with The Flagship Eclipse on Facebook as an example journey into becoming Darth Talon. Thank you for sharing your work and experience. Be well, Thomas
  15. Good afternoon dearest Bill, I write to inform that this thread has been shared on our FaceBook page's Friday Flagship Forum Feature (03.07.2015) as a fine example of the depth and variety offered by our users on The Flagship Eclipse forum. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with our community.
  16. Good Evening, It is paramount that all questions regarding costume eligibility be proceeded by image and context for reference. In the practice of due diligence these references should be researched by the interested parties before submitting to Legion Command for review. Barriss Offee has two Clone Wars appearances in her Jedi Robes that might be considered for 501st membership. Though some might view using the costume as a filler for one’s Legion roster, the character’s allegainces genuinely do switch while appearing as a Jedi. 1st Would be Brain Worm Barriss Offfe who attacks Ahsoka under control of a mind parasite. In Clone Wars season 5 on Barriss is proven to be a Traitor, and this revelation would extend retroactively to her appearance earlier in the episode in full jedi gear. In 501st terms it would be important to consider to match the reference for Clone Wars Barriss Offee. Clone Wars Barriss is shown to have an ornate bracer on her left arm and deep ribbing on her centre bodice panel and arm panels. The Asajj Ventress Bounty Hunter helmet costume might be more aptly named as Barriss Offee: Asajj Bounty Hunter Disguise.
  17. Thank you for the heads up Gonza, I wanted to respond before I head out on my road trip. (I am following an employment lead out of state.) I always recommend folk include Research images and source information with their 501st builds. Here is what I have; TFU: Apprentice Sith Robes Concept Design Property of LucasArts. ©2009 Lucasfilm Ltd. ® and ™[/size] Your soft goods look to be coming along nicely. The amour by contrast looks flat and lacks dimension. I would approach this components as sculpture and cast in fibreglass myself You may be able to get more dimension and form with the combination of manipulation with a heat gun and adding depth with more layers of material. Thank you for sharing your WIP. Be well, Thomas
  18. Good evening, It may have been years since I last told you, but you are an inspiration. You will always be in the top five of my personal costume heroes. This creation is masterful. I have shared a link to this post on The Flagship Eclipse’s Friday Flagship Forum Feature. Thank you for all you bring to this Universe.
  19. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous build and congratulations on your 501st Legion membership. SL21028 is Legion ID very well earned. I am sharing this thread on The Flagship Eclipse’s Facebook page as our Friday Flagship Forum Feature. We would be honoured for you to join us Taras.
  20. Good afternoon Davide, Lovely meeting you in person and seeing this work in action. (Davide’s helmeted Inquisitor stands between the two Maras.) I have selected this public thread to promote on our FB page as our Friday Flagship Forum Feature. It is our First Friday Flagship Forum Feature. Davide’s costume falls under Disney’s current definition of canon which might seem out of place in The Flagship Eclipse’s Expanded Universe/Legend canon manifest. But we recognize that in SW the Future is always in motion. While the more permanent detachment home of non-movie/Disney canon villains is not yet finalized, The Flagship Eclipse welcomes discussion of this WIP build. Be well, Thomas
  21. Good afternoon, Your Evolution Guri is looking lovely. For reference: And here is a lady I met at Jedi Con in Germany with her interpretation. While the repentant Evolution Guri is a Rebel Legion costume, discussion and costume development of your costume here is welcomed. Be well, Thomas
  22. Good afternoon, With the focussed of your Naa’leth shifted to her first appearance (Hooded,) we need to focus on the details of supporting reference. This promo image makes her top more red than mandarin orange. More hooded screen shots would help collaborate that her first appearance and unhooded appearance involve the same colour scheme. (It is possible that they tweaked her colours between appearances to make her stand out more, effectively making two separate tops.) But we do allow for a certain colour range/tolerance with the 501st. I would not defer your review on so slight a colour concern. Here is an example of the same costume leaning towards a more red interpretation; I am a bit concerned with the proportion of your hood. I feel it is a bit large. That may require revision. I now that criticism this late in the process may seem discouraging but take heart; Your costume build is very well made. I feel your costume approval could go either way as it stands. Please take my words for suggestion for possible improvement. Be well, Thomas
  23. Good morning, These prints are listed as “501st Compliant.” I am not sure what you intend with this, but it infers 501st endorsement, something our costuming community does not do. Please remove allusions to the 501st from your offerings. Sharing your work in progress is encouraged. I recommend sharing both the reference material and your work side by side;
  24. Good evening, Visual reference is key for costume recreation in the 501st. The images must be vetted. No Deviant Art or other fan work can be considered as official reference unless that fan happened to have been commissioned by Lucas Films for an official SW product. The Mara Jade Choices of One suit references change between the hard cover and paper back art; Hard Cover, not of much use as a costume reference Paper Back image without text begins to reveal part of the suit, notice the rib armour and complex shoulder armour I do not know the source of this image, but it appears to be support the same body armour but offers a clearer view. The SW Essential Reader’s companion seems to combine all influences nicely, but still falls short of a complete reference. A complete reference front to back, head to toe may be required to approve a new costume for 501st membership. There are other images of Mara Jade in full sleeved outfits, but yours appears to be based on the as presented. I would point to the shoulder, rib armour and bracers as points that need adjustment to better match the amalgam of references. I would pick either the paper back or the Essential Reader’s Guide as the base reference and go from there. As Detachment Leader, I do not approve costumes. My role is to advise. Your build is impressive, but it may require additional work to be approved by the same guidelines as other costumes in the 501st Legion. Be well, Thomas
