  1. In addition to the concerns detailed above, I presented this point to the LMO's and members of the DL forum;
  2. As far as Official requirements go PLEASE IGNORE ALL CRL entries. You are to research the character yourself and make your costume match the reference. Do not seek to match an approved costume. In theory, by virtue of research and labour, your costume should match other approved costumes, and photos someone took as an example of the collaborative understanding of a given costume. You might be asked to revise your costume when you think you are done. It is a process, a labour of love. You may find great help here, perhaps the best collection of references and costume tips for the subject on the net. But I do not think you will find a step by step break down of the process. Not yet. If you personally would like to volunteer to write one, and help collect the requisite image of member-made costume images, I will volunteer my own tyme to process the images and format the text for a CRL entry. Be well, Thomas
  3. Yes. Lumiya is approved for Legion membership. DS 10010 I personally find it incredibly annoying that folk believe that a Costume Reference Library entry is required for 501st approval. That is a failure of terminology and understanding. Though it clearly reads Costume Reference Library, members still believe CRL stands for costume requirement list. It does not. Be well, Thomas
  4. Good afternoon, Amidala, can you please edit the topic of this thread to read DS: Dark Side Legion Designation Discussion This is an important topic and I do not want interested parties to miss it. I spoke with Damian this weekend. Damian is pushing to see designations changed based on role. He clarified that he based the DS distinction concentrating on who was a Sith LORD. Basically those with Darth in their title. This was posted on December 25th, in the five page thread Letter Designations... Questions 1,2,3,...4... visible only in the Detachment Leader forum. I have egg on my face for not seeing this thread. Damian did not consider that this grouping just happened to affect only members of our detachment. Those other DL’s that did participate in the discussion had nothing at stake when they gave their support of the change to DS. One officer volunteered to make the DS frame sets, but did not happen to send advance word to myself. I am a bit stymied that this happened, but it is not undoable. I believe an overhaul of the Legion Designation system would make sense, “on paper.” In the strictest terms it has been “broken” for years. I served as LMO for four years and after consideration, I decided it would cause more upset than it would be worth to make the two lettre designations agree with SW canon as defined as canon at a given moment. I felt that the addition of a subcategory addressed that issue nicely; SL - Darth Maul Notice Darth Maul, the apprentice to Darth Sidious is still classified as a Sith Lord. If the division was based strictly on Mastery, the title of Lord, Maul might well be placed in DS and Mother Talzin should be back in SL. I had first assumed the division was based on who was trained as a Sith. With that criteria the division makes sense to me at least for all characters purposed with the exception of Visas Marr. I will post a revised version of my thoughts here to the Detachment Leaders forum and let our fellows know that a few TFE members have begun to express their concern. I think more of our membership would be upset if they knew about this. I'd like to put the word out on FB but, Facebook is not the proper arena for internal affairs of the Legion. Please spread the word. Your input is vital.
  5. I raised concern that affected folk will be upset over the change because of personal identification this morning on the Legion Forum, on the private Detachment Leader board; But even if the DS designation sticks, the Legion ID, stands. It could be argued that members affected by this, would be less like to identify by their Legion ID by principal. Dark Side characters as listed are all unique or named characters. The bottom line is that Legion Command is making a effort to better organize the Legion ID system. It should not affect Legion nor Detachment membership participation. Rather it is a clerical revision that affects how Legion profiles are sorted and perceived by public viewership. Please voice your concerns and comments here and I will continue to serve as Detachment Liaison with the Legion Membership Officers. Be well, Thomas
  6. Good morning, It took awhile for me to find out how this came to be. There was a break down in communication. On the Legion forum, in the Detachment Leaders board, LMO Damian Jorgensen posted a thread at the end of August, 2013 entitled; Letter Designations... Questions 1,2,3,...4... Small wonder, I missed this thread. For three months and five pages, Damian has been discussing the virtues of overhauling Legion ID prefixes, from a mental organization point of view. While the most replies discussed the roles of non-bounty hunter Mandalorians and the consolidation of all Clone Troopers, Damian also raised the concern that not all characters under SL were Sith trained. Yes Mara Jade was trained and influenced by a Sith Master, but her training never included the ways of the Sith. Asajj has the Darth Tyrannus quote reminding her that she is not Sith. From both game story line, novelization, and graphic novel Agent Starkiller, Lord Starkiller, and even the Sith Stalker are not trained as Sith. Instead we see a very powerful being, whose dark side powers are yoked by Masters unwilling to reveal their Sith teachings. Or at least this appears to be the thinking of Damian. I only was shown the thread yesterday. This reorganization is scheduled to affect many ID prefixes. I caution that we keep this development in perspective. In the end, this is a clerical issue. A reorganization of an ID system that over the past few decades has grown out of service. Legion ID prefix does not determine what detachment a costume is discussed in. It does not confer rank or character superiority– there is none in the 501st. I am now involved in the discussion. I will have a chance to speak with Damian in person tomorrow at our garrison formal. I prefer to put the change to Dark Sider (DS) on hold until a plan for all designations is mapped out, but that is not my call. This discussion is on going. I will continue to update as implications unfold. Be well, Thomas

  8. Good morning, It appears a number of the costumes that have had the designation of SL for years have been redesignated DS as a result of a decision or discussion that I am unaware of. This concerns me deeply as I am the acting Detachment Leader for all of the costumes affected and yet I was not contacted by those making the decision nor can I even find a topic on all the boards that I have access to even discussing the decision. A change in designation does not change a costume’s approval. A rose is still a rose by any other name… But I think a courtesy was missed by not involving our detachment before the decision was made and put into effect. It happens, nothing to have hard feelings over. I would ask that the change be undone until all parties involved can discuss but, I accept that the final decision is up to Legion Command Staff; specifically Legion Membership Officers Damian and Kenneth. I will keep you posted with anything I learn about this event.

  10. When we spoke about this topic this morning, I was typing from my phone. This is the originating image for the Sea Trooper I spoke of. I understand the illustration is from a RPG Book published by West End Games. For 501st purposes, interested costumers would have to research and verify that reference on their own. This piece I share as a colour inspiration, clearly derived from the West End Games book, its source would need verification as well; Andy Miller was originally approved in the Legion with a suit based on this reference; However, being painted blue, the suit is technically an unsupported custom creation and was removed from the 501st Legion roster subsequently. For further discussion of this unit and the 501st please visit the Spec Ops Detachment. Be well.
  11. Bonjour, Your costume progress is taking on an impressive look. I very much appreciate your interpretation and approach to the cut of and colouring of the robe. For reference I would like to share the work of Kathy van Beuningen, our first representative of this character in the 501st Legion. (This photo was from 2003, before there was a Flagship Eclipse Detachment, before the stricter costume/reference match reviews that Legion applicants encounter today.) I am confident your creation will be a fine asset to the Legion once complete. Be well, Thomas
  12. Good evening, Lord Hethrir. I really dislike the use of wikipedia as a reference for…anything. That personal preference is based on physical research and finding entries in the wikipedia trumped up to meet the author/fan’s personal desires. It seems Lord Hethrir does not appear in all the books mentioned in the linked article. Of the four books on the list with visual entries that I personally own, his name is mentioned in three, and but only the Dark Side Source Book offers an image. A shoulders up, impressionistic portrait; Other images I have seen have been hard to reference. Fan art, especially custom made TCG images, cannot be considered for 501st character reference. The SWG character labled Lord Hethrir on images searches would need to be vetted as an essential NPC, and not simply a custom NPC someone labeled. And example of SWG tossing EU names onto non canon representations has crossed my desk before. Take this example of the SWG DURGE for example. For 501st approval, vetted reference images of the character front to back, head to toe will be required. Lord Hethrir’s character appears to have been developed and killed off in the space of the story The Crystal Star (1994). He does not appear on the cover art. A person interested in recreating this character and seeing it approved in the 501st would need to research images and vet them. Using google image search might be a start, but for something this obscure one may need to hunt down an purchase physical books and magazines. I suspect the lone head to toe line art that I have seen is from yet another RPG book. Colour of the fabric would also need to be vetted. If the individual is really interested in recreating this character, they should do so, regardless of possible 501st approval. Any research that they do along the way can only help. Be well, Thomas
  13. Good Afternoon, I believe Darth Maleval would qualify as a Legion approvable character. I strongly caution against reposting images from a Wikipeda entry, or Google search as reference without origin credit as both of these sources lead to fan art which can be misleading. Legacy featured two Quarren SIth Lords, Darth Maleval and Darth Azard; Darth Maleval appeared in SW Legacy 4. Darth Azard appeared in SW Legacy 20--22 and 47 It is possible for folk unfamiliar with the comics to mix and match costume details. As such, please consider SW Legacy the originating source for both characters. Be well, Thomas
  14. Good afternoon, As of today, 08.10.13 I find no image reference for a Lord Zetha on Google. That strikes me as odd for a NPC in a popular Star Wars game. It would appear this would be a very fringe character. Fringe characters are sometymes hard to get 501st approval because of the misconception that our costumes should be easily recognizable. 501st costumes must be well researched and excellently crafted. The character you describe as a NPC vendor. I should wonder under what circumstance one would see this character’s lightsabre. It is also odd to think anyone would take the tyme to design a unique sabre for what appears to be background NPC. A real world vendor might point you to misleading reference to make a sale. I will cannot say that is the case here, but I advise caution. Links to the vendor and images of the costume would also be of help. Be well, Thomas
  15. The Night Sister example above is Mary Ellen Berglund (SL-8447), seen here in during her internship at NASA; Mary Ellen is a powerful force in costume craftsmanship.
  16. From Dragon**Con last weekend; I thought for sure this beautiful Asian lady would be you. But she said she had not yet visited our boards. I thought you might appreciate the interpretation. Be well, Thomas
  17. Good afternoon, I would encourage the individual to costume the character that they love most. To my knowledge, no official visual reference has been drafted for the character, so Darth Tenebrous would not qualify for 501st review. I personally find it silly to limit one’s costume choice to approvable characters. However I would add, that when a fan’s costume is done well enough, over tyme artists working for LFL have adopted the fan’s interpretation for canon. Be well, Thomas
  18. The licensed MR sabre had a corvectec-like knob where most fan versions of the MJ Decipher sabre have a corvetec disk; Both the Comic book two pack and 2013 Black Series Mara Jade action figures use this iconic sabre and have belt-mount corvetec clips to hang them; It is not a far stretch in Universe to see this hardware on an assassin who switches between blaster and sabre. But since we are referenced reinforced, I wanted to make sure that both of these examples were known to detachment members who use this sabre and wish to have reference to support the wearing of a corvectec clip. Be well, Thomas
  19. I am also interested to the back view of this unit. I believe Manny Llammas was the model maker for this piece. About pepakura. Don't be afraid to go off pattern. Where your have tubes, use tubes. Where there are disks, insert disks. It will save you tyme and look better in the final model. Be well, Thomas
  20. Good evening and thank you for sharing your build, I might suggest posting your build over on the 501st’s Special Ops Detachment; http://www.501stspecopsdet.net/‎ As the 501st Legion’s Detachment dedicated to Expanded Universe Troopers, they would be the unit to help sponsor the approval of this character in our ranks. Be well, Thomas
  21. About Comics; You will find differences in the details for the same character by different artists. You will find differences in the details for the same character by the same artist over the course of a character’s development. You will find differences in the details for the same character by the same artist, sometymes in the same comic, on the same page. For 501st standards, we must look at the references as a whole to define a standard. Darth Maladi is a Devaronian Female. As a defining characteristic of the species Devorians all have pointed ears. Some artist forget this. 501st standards serve to remind artists of the canon in the Universe they portray. For reference, male Devaronians also have horns; Please consider all drawings of Darth Maladi with human ears to be inaccurate and non canon for that aspect of her anatomy. Be well, Thomas
  22. Good morning, For the 501st, protocol is to default to the originating reference for a character. When a character grows in popularity, folk will seek to define minutia. This is well and good. I recommend starting at the source, in this case the base model for Darth Revan from KOTOR; The examples in the first post of this thread, LFL branded and all, constitute another form of fan art, where gifted artists draw from a popular character and make slight alterations either to make a character their own or out of lack of research. This is how a comic character’s details shifts from one issue to the next, how a video game character varies from platform to platform; Sith "Stalker" Wii vs the character defining model used in XBOX/PS/PC/ versions. Polls are suspect to popularity and the information presented. While it takes a second to click based on given information, it took me a hour to research and find the images for this one post. While I think it would be cool to match the screen shot for under the mask, I believe that the suggestion of the same as an approved costume variant will be met with resistance by the 501st membership team, in much the same way a helmetless Boba Fett submission would be. Over tyme, even that could change. Be well, Thomas
  23. Good afternoon Damian, In response to your question I called Jan Duursema at home just now. Darth Maladi, Star Wars: Legacy Costumed by Nyna Nothung (SL-3937) Pride of German Garrison Jan responded that the Darth Maladi’s top is intended to be constructed of tooling leather or some like material that would felx and bend with the wearer. As the character’s creator and a knowledgable costume maker herself, I would suggest deference to Jan as the authority on this matter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and asking our Detachment for input. Your consideration is appreciated greatly. Be well, Thomas
  24. The Legacy trooper armour had its best interpretation in issue 4 of the series. Hasbro based theirs on a standard stormtrooper. I would dismiss it as reference. I recommend for folk who are serious about a referenced character to pick up the actual references physically, never to be limited to what can be found on the Internet. It may be of interest to note that the current Disney 3-D scan a personal figure offers a female trooper body which appears based on the Gentle Giant interpretation of the Legacy character. Be well, Thomas
  25. Absolutely stunning. Thank you for continuing to share your inspirational work with our community. Be well, Thomas
