Xbox has had a couple of hits this summer. One of these games is proving to be a huge hit on PS5, but the other is actually a console exclusive to the Xbox Series X, so nobody on PS5 is enjoying it, but lots are enjoying it on Xbox. In fact, this Xbox Series X console exclusive game — which is increasingly uncommon — was the third most downloaded game of August 2025, behind only Peak and Delta Force. This is, at least according to a new report.
The new report comes the way of Alinea Analytics, who specifically claims that Grounded 2 was the third most downloaded game of August 2025 across Steam and consoles. And considering it’s not on PS5 or Nintendo Switch, this is an impressive feat, if accurate. That said, what is worth noting is that Grounded 2 is on Xbox Game Pass, which means millions can download it for free. To this end, the same report believes about 80% of Grounded 2 players are on Xbox, despite Steam having the larger install base. Xbox Game Pass is, of course, on PC, but it has a much larger install base on Xbox consoles.
Not a Surprise
If this new report is accurate, it would not be very surprising. When people talk about Obsidian Entertainment’s best game, they often cite Fallout: New Vegas, or perhaps South Park: The Stick of Truth, or even The Outer Worlds. Grounded, from 2022, probably would not get many shouts, despite it being the developer’s most-played game to date. To this end, over 20 million users downloaded the original Grounded. Whether Grounded 2 will recreate this success, we do not know, but we know it had 3 million players a couple of weeks after its release at the end of July. So it’s off to a decent start, but it will need to match Grounded’s longevity to get anywhere near 20 million.
After a somewhat disappointing start to 2025, featuring one of the biggest flops of the year, Xbox quietly had a great summer. In fact, with Grounded 2 and Gears of War: Retold leading the way, Xbox was probably only second to Nintendo this summer, and Nintendo was obviously way ahead of everyone else thanks to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
