call me old-school - but I tend to go to my local Hancock Fabrics (because all of the ladies that work there are EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgable and will give me hints for working with WHATEVER i am making - they are also interested to see what I am working on and request to see pictures when I finish my projects) :)

I wouldn't call going to the local store being old fashion, but both Hancock and JoAnn's (same company BTW) have limited stock and so it's good to see other sources for fabrics or notions that are hard to find in certain areas.

Where I live, near Philadelphia, there is a fantastic source for African prints and things the Mummers need for their costumes, but leather or certain fabrics are down right impossible to find around here.

I think the reason that I like my Hancock so much is because the ladies who work there are SO interested in what everyone who shops there is making - ever since they found out that I was into Star Wars Costuming - they have asked me what types of fabrics that I use and are used in the costuming - since then, their stock in the stuff that I use has (slightly) increased and when they had a big sale on wools - they pulled a bolt of a BEAUTIFUL brown woven wool and held it in back until i popped around again .. ;) now all i have to do is finish the hem

Now that is nice.

The local JoAnn's here knows I make SW costumes on commission but they never stock what I need and I constantly have to have fabric ordered in.

(not going to jo-ann bash) but the "kids" who work there know LITTLE about sewing and fabrics (and I asked one, once, where the boning was since they "appeared" to be out and she told me that they did not stock boning - not to mention they are always EXCESSIVELY busy and I do not enjoy the stress of trying to shop when there are a TON of people in the store when I am browsing fabrics - that was the day I first went to Hancock (which is in a MUCH more difficult to get to location, but their selection is REALLY nice, fewer fabrics, but much MUCH nicer quality at THIS store) :)

Heh....and that was the cheapest I found for the color I needed. I mean, i saw that dharma trading had it for cheaper, but still required dye and well, the steel blue from thai silks was simply too perfect :-D

I googled for about 3-4 days at 4ish hrs per day to find what I was looking for.
