Darth Nihilus WIP from Germany

Hey. I'm working on a Darth Nihilus at the Moment. It is the first Costume I want to do all by myself at least when it comes to the sewing. One Question: In the CRL it says" the same black Material". Does this mean the whole Costume is made of the same Material (except the arms)?

I wanted to use different black fabric for the outer and the inner layers of the tunics and the Skirts:

Inner Tunic and Skirt: Black cotton

Outer Tunic, Cape, Obi and Skirt: Heavy, black linen.

This is because of the weight of the fabric and the comfort of the whole costume... Do you think it'll work? You won't be able to tell from the color of the material. Only if you touch it... What do you think?

Servus

It has to look the same is the main point.

The weave of the material needs to be the same.  The color black needs to match exactly.

No one is going to touch the material, so that is not the issue.

The problem that may occur over time, by trooping and/or washing, is that one material may fade differently than the other.  So it could look correct when it is newly made, but after several troops the two different types of material could start looking like 2 different shades of black.

In my opinion if it says it should be the same material, then it should be the same material.  My Nihilus is made out of raw black silk for every layer, except the arms, and I don't think that it's that heavy or uncomfortable.  You're wearing all black so heat wise it's going to be hot no matter what.

Well yes you are correct, if it says same material, it should be the same material.

I was just explaining the reasoning behind the same material, and how different materials could then cause a problem later on.

Nils,

Instead of using 2 different materials, you may want to consider using a different material altogether, that other Nihilus have chosen to use in their builds, so its the same material and you don't run into problems later.

I will send you a PM on the GG forums about another GG member who has made this costume and did it all herself, she can probably give you some tips and let you know what materials she used in her Nihilus.  Or you could also consider the raw black silk Kracker98 has mentioned above.

Yes TS-8642. It's just an awsome Character and I remebered how much I liked it in the games back than. And I wanted to do a costume where I can make more by myself.

Right now I'm working on the hood and cape. And I have a question...

I've read that there are two ways: One is to make the hood and cape out of one single piece of fabric, the other is to use two pieces and let them look as if they were one... Are both allowed to get 501st approval?

Oh and I wanted to use two kind of fabric for optical reasons and for the weight. ;) Turned out that you can't save much wiehgt that way. :))

So usually I don't post WIP Pictures but I made some good progress this weekend and I want to share. :D

So this is it. So only thing missing now is the hood and cape and the mask. And I have to buy a turtleneck sweater to cover the neck and the "Triangle from the sweatshirt I'm wearing.... What do you say?

What do you say?

So good so far, minus the missing pieces and the weathering.

As the CRL says Hood and Cape should be one piece of material, that is the only thing I would suggest.

Do you have 2 tunics with the costume?  It's a little hard to tell from the picture.  Also are there 2 separate skirts?

Yes its two skirts and two tunics. I will post details as soon as I made further progress.

The hood and cape will be done as soon as I have the crown.

I must admit that I wanted two use two pieces of fabric as I wanted to be able to close the cape in the front. I like it much better this way. But now I reconsiderd. I will not put Style before the CRL.  :))

It's just not the COTF version if the cape closes in the front. So I wil stick to the CRL.

I wil weather the whole thing when I'm finished. It's the hardest part... first you make the thing and than you destroy it.... ;)

There is only thing i would claim:

The bottom of the Gi is not even. The closure is not matching its counterpart.

[Ok, i know there will be weathering and then it will be hardly noticable :D]

Ok that makes sense, Nils.

Mine should be ready this saturday. Yay. :D

I just noticed the collars of my Gi are coming together much higher but that's just a matter of taste/preferred style.
