Looking for some advice - Bastila Shan

Kylo Revan

Recommended Posts

I'm throwing this up in Off Topic since it refers to a 'good girl' in this case.

My wife and I are looking to work up a Bastila Shan costume so we can pair up with myself as Revan when we troop.

We have two issues:

1 - Neither of us have worked in the leather/pleather realm.  She can sew well though.  Is pleather a pain in the butt, and any recommendations on a good brand that approximates brown leather?

2 - Figuring out the layers/pattern.  There are tons of reference shots at http://newsite.rebellegion.com/bastila-shan-knights-of-the-old-republic/ (albeit some are pretty poor due to game graphics) but I know some people out there have made this before. Anyone familiar with it, or know someone who is?  We're not opposed to potentially getting outside assistance but so far the only option for that has turned out to be a cosplay vendor in China and I'm iffy on that.

I posted asking on the Rebel forums, but there wasn't much response so I thought I'd try with the EU crew here!

Thanks!

Hi

I´m not familar with this costume, since, as you also pointed out, she is one of the good ones  :))

As to your questions - leather is sometimes easier to work with, when we´re talking about larger things like tabbards and straps.

Perhaps we can get others to chime in on this ??

I did find this cosplayer :  http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/costume/view/85686

Pleather is relatively easy to work with. It sews much like normal fabric with a few changes. It is useful to put paper between the fabric and your machine/foot. Tissue paper or wax paper works well. It just means it flows through the machine well.

Both pleather and leather will never heal holes. So if you see it wrong, and rip out the seams, you will see the holes you made the first time round forever. For both, though, use a leather needle rather than a normal one. Real leather may or may not be able to be done on a machine. It depends on the weight.

Leather is better for actual straps, as it has a lot more strength to it. Pleather can slowly stretch over time to the point where it rips. You can reinforce depending on what it is, but for straps I recommend real leather if there is any weight bearing.

Leather is a lot harder to work with. There is zero stretch in it, so if it's any kind of bodysuit you will not be able to really move in a full fitting leather outfit.

There is KOTOR canon Jedi Master Bastila

Then there is KOTOR canon Darth Malak’s apprentice;

There are a lot of fan reskins for this character. I believe the above was the one used in the game.

I believe a combination of Leather/hard armour and elastic (not pleather) leather like material would serve best in recreating the game costume.

Here are a few examples I have seen personally;

It is driving me crazy trying to find the image I took of this lady, but at last I found another shot of her Dark Bastila

The costume looks best to me when there is depth—actual scrolling on the armour.
Some have used craft foam to approximate leather. It is not the most durable.

Leather might be the way to go for certain elements like the gorget and shoulders.

Please share your progress here.
