Darth Nihilus W.I.P

Hello all! Well it's time to admit it... I'm not very crafty. That said I'm looking to purchase a Nihilus costume rather than make one. I was looking at several options and came across this seller on ETSY. Just wondering if you all think this would be a good base to complete a 501st approvable Nihilus on. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome

Well it´s hard to see all the details on the pics, and it looks to have potentiale- but you´ll still have to make mods on it... + get the right belt, gloves and boots..

I think it´s a very high price to pay for something, that still needs a lot of work...

Thanks for the feedback. Could you suggest some other place to look for pre built costume pieces? The only other place I saw was cosplayhouse and it doesn't look ver nice. What would you say the average cost of this costume is? I'd like to do it over a year, year and a half tops and stretch it out. I find that when I try to sew(a handful of time) I spend money on material and screw them up so I'd really just like to have this made instead of making it myself. Thanks for all the advice.

As my fellow member of NG also points out - it´s not that hard to make by yourself...  most I know make their own costumes, so it´s hard for me to give advices on, where to buy a premade one, haven´t seen anyone else then WA...

I made a Nihilus COFT for a fellow member of NG and it took me and my mum only 1 week - I´m not that good with a sewing machine either, but one learns

With good patterns, you can´t go wrong... I would print out the CRL from in here, take it with me to a fabric store and get some help there - perhaps they also have someone, who could sew it ??

I can´t remember, how much the price were to make this, but it wasn´t as pricy as WA.

Ok thanks. Did you draw up your own patterns or are there some floating around out there? That seems to be the trickiest part for me(for everyone?) Thanks again!

My mum have made a lot of dresses and skirts in her time, so she helped me out with the patterns...

The skirt is easy and you don´t need a pattern for it - you "just" take a lot of fabric and make a circle with many wrinkles on it and sew it together, remember the split in the front.

You basicly only need a pattern for a tunic with long sleeves - this way you can use it for both the inner and outer tunic.  I put the quiltet sleeves on to the inner tunic - it works fine. Also I put the outer skirt onto the innertunic also

There is going to be used a lot of fabric for this one, but you usually can get a good offer in a fabric store, since you are going to need the same fabric for all of the parts except for the piece under the mask...

The obi is simply a long piece of fabric with velcro in the back - I made it double and ironed it well to get it to stay in place.

The hood and cape -  take the mask and the triangular support (if not attached to the mask) on - then you must meassure yourself from the upper of the mask, over your head and to the floor - do remember not to wear boots at this point.  Depending on your shoulders width, you´ll need a piece of fabric in those two meassurements hight x width. Then you attach the fabric to the mask and draps it over you shoulders - remember you need enough fabric to make a frame around your head and for the single knot in front at the upper sternum.

It´s the best I can guide you with... I hope, that it can help you...  ;)

you must measure yourself from the top of your head and down to earth

Helps quite a bit! Now to wrap my head around it all. I could always get one of those generic Jedi patterns off of eBay for the tunic...

Ok, so I've found my fabric thanks to Scott's tutorial. From what I can tell this whole thing is made from only the one fabric, correct? Also any tips on how to make a head form without using fiberglass?

I used the Simplictiy pattern 5840 to make my Nihilus tunics. It is a fairly easy pattern to follow and modify as needed.

Yes, the fabric on the sleeves is different to everything else, so you only need a small amount of that fabric.

One of the best ways to make the crown piece that is easy and fairly cheap is to use Worbla or Wonderflex. Both work great!

I normally take Nihilus robe commissions as well, but I am booked for the year at the moment. Making 2 sets in the next couple weeks for clients. Always fun making more Nihilus stuff! It really is an easy costume to learn to sew. The great thing is not needing to hem the skirts, just weathering them, so that makes it much easier too. I can take pictures of my next robe progress and post them if you need any visual reference.

Cheers,

Nef

Any pictures you are willing to take  for reference would be great! It'll probably be a while until I start due to the fact that I'm getting married in October and I don't think she'd like to see any extra funds going elsewhere  :-)  It is possible that I could do little bits here and there before hand though...

Also I'm not too familiar with non film sabers. Are there any on the ultra sabers sight that will work for Nihilus, do they come with blades?

   Thanks again!

Depending on your garrison rules, most sabers can do as long as it´s with a red blade and not Vaders or other well-known hilts...

I got mine custome made for my Visas Mare / Darth Traya - and my friend bought his from a store for the NIhilus...

My Nihilus hilt was made by Moonbase Creations, the gentleman who made it is on these forums as Paradoxdj. You could try messaging him as well. Before getting my Nihilus hilt, I just used a basic plan silver hilt from Ultra Sabers.

Keep in mind that a sabre is not required for 501st approval, just the costume. So a lot of costumers get the outfit first, get approved, and then look at getting a weapon. Just a suggestion. Some start with the lightsaber right away as it is a pretty cool thing to have. ;)

Cheers!

Great to know, I'll go a head and send him a PM. I've wanted a saber since I was a little kid(a nice saber that is). I think it will also motivate me to get the rest done. Plus I'd like to have it for Boston Comic Con and the John Williams concert in August. I'm searching ultra sabers right now and... SO MANY OPTIONS/LEVELS!!! Do you happen to have any pictures of the two you mentioned?

Our garrison just did a troop for our local philharmonic orchestra with the John Williams concert. We've done a few times in the past and it is always a lot of fun. Last weekend I got to be one of the lucky ones picked to escort the conductor on stage and stand up there while they played the Imperial March. It was amazing!

One of our troopers took some video of the end of the concert and the encore where we come on stage.

As for sabres, here is a picture of the two hilts that I use. The shiny one with the switch showing is the Ultra saber.

That's awesome, I can't wait to see him. Looking at saberforge as well now. Seeing what the garrison says about it before I order.
