Prefix: DS
Detachment: The Flagship Eclipse Detachment
Context: Star Wars Expanded Universe
Karis is member of the mysterious Nightsister clan on Dathomir and was recognized by her master Talzin as one of the greatest warriors of the Nightsisters, with fellow sister Naa'leth. Karis says nothing preferring to let her weapons do the talking for her.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


DS Karis Hood.jpg Hood
  • The Hood has a rigid structure to maintain its shape, and not sag or collapse.
  • The base of the hood is be stiffened.
  • The outer fabric shall be layered with 8 to 13 individual folds/bands of alternating shades of red. (3 contrasting red shades are required).
  • Each individual fold wraps around the hood and overlap at the rear, to create a chevron effect.
  • The fabric has a matte finish, similar to Lycra/Spandex.
  • The inside of the hood is to be red and matches the color of the leading edge of the opening.
  • The front opening of the hood is to be pointed above the center of the forehead.
  • A visible ridge/steam is to extend from the center of the forehead point, to the peak of the hood.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The overall height from the base to the peek is to be approx. 330mm (13inches).
  • The overall width (at the widest point) is to be 280mm (11 inches).




DS Karis Neckseal.jpg Neck Seal
  • The Neck seal is rigid to maintain its shape, and is made from the same fabric, and colors as the Hood.
  • 4 individual layers, each layer is approximately 3mm (1/8 inch) thick.
  • Each layer is to be pointed at the front.
  • Each layer is to be curved and shaped, so as to snugly fit the shoulders and back.
  • The Neck Seal will be closed at the back with Velcro, and be secured to the Hood via a hidden Velcro seam around the neck.

  • Red one piece sleeveless leotard with a high collar
  • Made of non-textured material, with no visible zippers, or logos/designs.

  • 2 toned red wraps, over white leggings.
  • The white of the leggings is to match in color, as close as possible to the make-up color used on the face and Arms
  • The red strips of wrapping are to be individually stitched to the leggings.




DS Karis Bodice.jpg Bodice & Shoulder Shroud
  • The bodice and shoulder shroud can be made as one piece or two.
  • The main color of these elements is Red and a shade lighter than the body suit.

  • The bodice is to be made from a thick material, creating a molded effect, while still remaining flexible.
  • Form fitting around the bust line and create a cross over effect, which wraps around the body and attaches at the rear, with a hidden fastener.
  • Shoulder shroud is rigid so as to hold its shape without sagging or collapsing.
  • It protrudes past the shoulders sufficiently to create a bell effect while also enclosing the top of the shoulders.
  • The rear wing is made up of a single strip, of rigid material, covered in red fabric, tapering at each side to a point.
  • At the central point of attachment, between the shoulder blades. The width of the strip is approximately 45mm (1.75 inches), widening to approx. 65mm (2.5 inches) in line with the apex of the shoulder bell. It then tampers to a point approx. 125mm (5 inches) beyond the outer most edge of the shoulder bell.
  • There should be a slight upturn of the point, at each side.




DS Karis Obi.jpg Obi & Belt
  • The Obi is to be made from a thick material to create moulded effect.
  • The main body should be layered in 2 sections, with the upper layer being one shade lighter red than the lower layer.
  • The front of the Obi shall be approx. 75mm (3 inches) wide, widening out around the hips to the rear.
  • The rear of the Obi, should cover from the lower back, extending down partially covering the buttock.
  • The Obi is closed at the front via a hidden fastener such as Velcro.
  • A thin belt, approx. 25mm (1 inch) wide, with a rectangular buckle, is worn over the Obi.
  • The thin belt and buckle is to be a darker red that that of the Obi.




DS Karis Gloves.jpg Gloves
  • 2 toned wrapped, finger less glove, extending from the top of the knuckles, up the arm to just below the elbows.
  • The upper strips of wrapping are to be individually stitched to the Glove, and are to be a darker shade of red to the glove itself.




DS Karis Arms.jpg Arms
  • Any exposed skin on the arms is covered in a white opaque face or body paint.




DS Karis Boots.jpg Boots
  • The boots are a 2 toned wrapped Lycra / Spandex sock covering over a light, flat soled shoe, similar to a ballet flat.
  • The upper strips of wrapping are to be individually stitched to the Boot, and are to be a darker shade of red to the boot itself.
  • The top of the boot shall sit partially up the shin, and the wrapping should be such, that they match or at least blend into the pattern of the wraps on the leggings.

  • White face makeup with light grey markings as per reference picture.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


DS Karis Eyes.jpg Eyes
  • Eyes are blue.
  • This style of contact lens may be worn, if desired.
    • While encouraged to complete the look of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance, if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons.
    • All persons utilizing contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.




DS Karis Face Mask.jpg Face Mask
  • A red half faced cloth covering nose and lower half of the face as per reference picture.




DS Karis Sword.jpg Sword
  • Single handed grip khukri style blade and pommel.
  • The hand guard and blade have a metal finish.
  • he handle has a wooden finish.




DS Karis Sabre.jpg Lightsaber
  • Generic Jedi hilt with green blade.
