This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Malgus Head.jpg Head and Complexion
  • Head is bald naturally or with the use of a bald head cap.
  • Make-up consists of a pale base.
  • A blue make-up pencil is used to create the illusion of large veins.
  • The area surrounding each eye is darkened with eye shadow.
  • Rigid Collodion (Scarring Liquid) is applied to the back of the head and both cheeks.




Malgus Facemask.jpg Facemask
  • The mask is attached to a wrap-around neck piece.
  • Face Mask includes a pair of red acrylic button lights on front.
  • Face Mask includes pair of silver mesh panels, with one on each side.
    • Optional: Mesh panels are made with screening material to allow airflow.
  • Armor is weathered with silver metallic coloring.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Red acrylic button lights are illuminated.




TK anh stunt neckseal.jpeg Neck Seal
  • Neck Seal is black with horizontal ribs, fitted to the wearer, and extending from the base of the neck to the top of the Adam's apple.
  • Neck seal includes a fabric bib to ensure the Under Suit is always covered.




Malgus Undersuit.jpg Under Suit
  • The under Suit includes a upper and lower half.
  • The shirt portion of the Under Suit is quilted with vertical lines.
  • The Trousers are loose but not baggy.
  • The upper section of the trousers are quilted with 1-inch vertical lines, from the waist to the knee.
    • The area extending from the knees to the cuffs are smooth and free of details.
  • Optional: A button / zip fly, suspenders, and stirrups.
  • Hook and loop fastener is placed around the suit to hold the various sections of ribbed padding.




Malgus Cape.jpg Cloak
  • The Cloak is made of a black material such as gabardine or monks cloth.
  • The Cloak includes a hood.
  • The Cloak is long enough to rest a few inches on the floor.
    • Optional: The cloak is slightly shorter than floor length for safety and cleanliness reasons.
  • The Cloak fastens to the back armor, at the top of the shoulder blades and under the shoulder armor, with a snap at each side.
  • Optional: Hook and loop fastener is placed across the top of the back to hold the Cloak in place.




Malgus Shoulders.jpg Shoulder Armor
  • Armor is painted black with a a semi-gloss finish.
  • The shoulders are separate from the chest and back armor.
  • The Shoulder Armor is approximately 1/2 inch thick.
  • There are two raised detail pieces on the top of each shoulder.
  • The shoulders attach to the Chest Armor on each side.
  • Armor is weathered with silver metallic coloring.




Malgus Biceps.jpg Upper Arm Armor
  • The Upper Arm Armor is a grey color.
  • The armor has geometrical seams on both the front and back of the arm.
  • Black horizontal padding strips are attached to the outside of each arm.
  • Horizontal padding strips are approximately 1/4 inch thick by 1½ inches wide with rounded ends.
  • Each of the two sections have a pair of vertical detail lines.
  • Armor is weathered with silver metallic coloring.




Malgus Gauntlets.jpg Gauntlets
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish
  • The gauntlets are made of six separate pieces:
  • Left and right inner pieces.
    • Top and bottom outer pieces.
    • Each Gauntlet has upper and lower hexagon elbow pieces.
  • Gauntlets have a clam-shell design that hook together at hinge points.
  • The two octagonal elbow pieces snap to the cloth to hold them in place.
  • On the top surface of each gauntlet is a white circle and a series of small rectangular symbols.
  • Each gauntlets has (3) white and (2) red acrylic buttons.
  • Just below the white buttons, on the side of each Gauntlet is a rectangular white square.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • All details, both red and white, are illuminated with back-lighting.




Malgus Handplates.jpg Hand Plates
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • Hand Plates are a hexagon shape with a top curved edge.
  • Hand Plates attach to the gloves by the use of an elastic band, snaps, or hook and loop fastener.

  • Black, wrist length, leather tactical style gloves.
  • Gloves include a reinforced section over the four knuckles.




Malgus Chest.jpg Chest Armor
  • Armor is painted grey and black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • The Chest Armor includes a raised neck collar.
    • The neck collar has a raised front center tab.
    • The raised neck collar includes a pair of small red lights.
  • The Chest Armor includes (3) raised multi-level circular areas.
  • The lower portion of the Chest Armor includes a pair of rectangular red lights.
  • Armor is weathered with silver metallic coloring.




Blankwhite.gif Torso Armor
  • The Torso Armor is made of grey vinyl.
  • The armor has (5) faux vertical seams on the front.
  • The armor closes in the back.
  • A set of plastic inserts create several accordion strips on the front of the abdomen.
  • The armor includes strips of hook and loop fastener around the body to secure the torso padding.
  • Snaps and/ or hook and loop fastener is attached to the armor, along the bottom edge, to connect the Codpiece.




Blankwhite.gif Torso Padding
  • The torso padding is made of faux strips of black foam.
  • Each strip is approximately 1/2 inch thick by 1.5 inches wide with rounded ends.
  • Padding attaches to Torso Armor with hook and loop fastener.




Malgus Back.jpg Back Armor
  • The Back Armor is a grey color.
  • The back armor includes inset and raised details.
  • The back has a separate black colored ‘Y’ section that extends down to the bottom of the piece.
  • A small black box section is located on the right side of the back.
  • Armor attaches with hook and loop fastener.
  • Armor is weathered with silver metallic coloring.




Malgus Codpiece.jpg Codpiece
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • The Codpiece includes several silver colored inset details on both the front and sides.
  • Codpiece buttons onto the waistband of the trousers and is secured in front with hook and loop fastener.




Malgus Posterior.jpg Posterior Armor
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • The Posterior Armor connects to the rear center of the waist belt with hook and loop fastener.




Malgus Thighs.jpg Thigh Armor Pads
  • The Thigh Armor padding is made of a plastic-backed batting material covered with a black pleather.
  • The pads are attached to the along the two vertical detail lines.
  • Pads are attached to the trousers in the front with hook and loop fastener.
  • The side portion of the armor is not connected to the trousers, giving it a raised curvature, away from the leg.
  • The rear flat portion of the armor is pleather covered plastic with no batting.




Malgus Shins.jpg Knee and Lower Leg Armor
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • The armor includes three pieces:
    • The main shin piece.
    • The upper knee piece.
    • The lower knee piece.
  • Both knee pieces are permanently attached to the trouser leg and are padded on the back for comfort.
  • The lower knee pieces are similar to the upper knees in their design.
    • The lower pieces do not hook to the trousers.
  • The lower knee pieces have a set of arms wrapped around which secure on both sides with hook and loop fastener.
  • All three of these pieces are connected together from the back.
    • A piece of cloth (matching the trousers) is sheathed over a piece of narrow plastic to keep the pieces spaced correctly.
  • Lower Leg Armor is hinged at the sides.
  • Armor attaches to leg with hook and loop fastener.




Blankwhite.gif Calf Padding
  • The padding material is made of black pleather.
  • Padding includes the appropriate seams and vertical detail lines.
  • Padding wraps ¾ of the way around the leg and rests on top of the boot.
  • There are dots of hook and loop fastener on the back, to attach to the leg.
  • This padding wraps around the leg from behind and hooks under the front armor piece.
  • There are grommets on the outside of the legs to attach to the armor.
  • There are snaps and additional pieces of hook and loop fastener on the inside.




Malgus Calf Armor.jpg Calf Armor
  • The Calf Armor attaches to the lower rear of the legs and slightly overlaps the top of the boots.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Armor is made of a hard rigid material with raised details.




Malgus Boot Armor.jpg Boot Caps (Foot Armor)
  • Armor is painted black with a semi-gloss finish.
  • The Boot Caps are made of a rigid material such as ABS or fiberglass.
  • Optional: Depending on their thickness, padding material is added under them to provide stability.
  • The two forward pieces snap directly onto the boots.
  • The rear heel has a wrap around piece that snaps to the boot and fits over the calf padding.




Malgus Boots.jpg Boots
  • Black leather boots with visible inside and outside ankle zippers.
  • Boots are mid-calf in height.
  • A leather piece around the foot with a leather patch on the heel.
  • Optional: Elastic heel panel for added comfort (hidden by heel armor piece).
  • The boots include four grommets on the top section.
    • Two for each armor piece.
    • Four grommets on the back for the heel armor.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boot include a center toe strip extending to the top of the foot.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Boot soles are layered with horizontal groove lines.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


SL maul eye.jpeg Sith Eyes
  • The contact lenses are described as a fiery yellow transitioning into a brilliant red.
  • This style of contact lens may be worn, if desired.
    • While encouraged to complete the look of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance, if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons.
    • All persons utilizing contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.




Malgus Lightsaber.jpg Lightsaber
  • A pair of blades on either side of the emitter.
  • The belt clip connection point is located on the top of the Lightsaber, between the two blades, allowing the Lightsaber to hang with the blade upward.




Lightsaberclip.jpg Lightsaber Clip
  • A rectangular Covertec clip is present to secure the Lightsaber.
  • The clip is attached to the belt on the wearer's right hip.
